SAN JOSE, Costa Rica -

"An American tourist who watched as a U.S. military veteran in his 70s used his bare hands to kill an armed assailant in Costa Rica said she thought the attempted robbery was a joke — until the masked attacker held a gun to her head."

Careless phrasing costs lives.
The headline actually means that the mugger had bare hands. !!!.

Perhaps the muggers handbook should include a warning to check the passenger manifest for ex-jarheads before innitiating the assault.  It could be listed under occupational health and safety regulations.

I remember years ago reading an article about a mugger trying to steal a woman's purse.
It was titled; "Navy Veteran Swabs Deck with Mugger." lolol
A guy tried to steal a woman's purse and the veteran broke the muggers' arm and held him for the police.
I guess he punched the shit out of the guy too as a picture showed the mugger all bloody! lol
Good for the Marine Veteran!
I like reading stories like that!

I like to see anytime someone successfully defends themselves against a crime. That is the backbone of a free and safe society. That's one of the reasons I am so adamant about guns. If a mugger knew that, in a certain area about ½ of the people carried guns, he would move on. If unaware of the fact, he might move on to the next life.

I like the now pointed out headline spoof. Pretty good, but my all time favorite is:

Children make great snacks

Me thinkst we need a thread over in Humor for those.

Termin8tor, me too!
One of the criteria I looked for before moving to S.C. was sensible gun laws and also that S.C. is a "shall issue" state as regards concealed weapons permits.
And, you can carry a loaded gun in your car without a permit here.
New Hampshire where I moved from is even easier than this state.
Go to the local police station or town hall, fill out a questionaire, $10 fee and pick up your permit in two weeks.
I just wouldn't live in a state with restrictive gun laws like Massachusetts or New York! Man, you NEED guns in those states!
Oh, how about "Tourist kills mugger with calloused hands?"

Good thing it happened in Costa Rica and not the U.K. or Australia... otherwise Parliament would be hard at work trying to figure out a way to ban hands.

I have a bunch.

A woman in Missouri woke up to find some guy on her bed thrusting his member at her pie hole.  She grabbed his danglies hard and helped him to the door.  The she got the gun from the side table and fired a few rounds in the general direction she saw him stagger off in.

An 82 year old woman in England had two guys do a home invasion.  She ended up chasing them down the street with her husband's sword.

A woman was grabbed from behind in Vegas during the day (she was a graduate of the program I teach) on a hot day.  She stomped on one of his feet.  The stiletto heel impaled his foot and stuck in the asphalt.  She stepped out of the shoe.  She stomped on his other foot.  Same thing.  She stepped out of the shoe.  Ran off.  Called the police.  They showed up a few minutes later and found the guy trying to figure out how to get the stiletto heels out of the asphalt.

I could go on...

Maybe the jarhead was related to Gerhard Brinkmann - the 88 year old who knocked out a mugger with one punch a couple of years ago. Held out the money in his left and when the guy reached for it, delivered a right hook. Brinkmann was a champion boxer in 1936.

The "headlock" in the story was probably a choke hold. Blood chokes are most commonly taught type, meaning to deprive the brain of oxygen by cutting off the blood flow. Properly applied they can render an opponent unconscious in just a few seconds. From the description in the story however, it sounds like it migrated into an air choke during the struggle. Quite different characteristics and results between the two types. The first can render an opponent unconscious in as little as 10-15 seconds. The other, well, it usually takes a while and isn't pretty.

Noooooooooo   Lets make sure that there are ex-marines with every group.   Then the muggers will have to hit on some one else and put that in their handbook.  Why pick on us Americans all the time.  Share the wealth.  LOL

The brain is an extremely greedy organ.  Cut off blood flow to it and it lose consciousness in seconds, like 3.  I try to explain that to students who think a choke hold will cut off air flow.

We teach instinctive reactions to stimuli.  Grab a student I have taught around the throat and feel the pain as your testicles or face are pounded into hamburger.

Great stories guys!  I have a personal one for you all.
My mom and auntie, two ladies in their senior years of
70 and 80 something respectively went on a cruise together.
Me mum walks with a cane, usually the wooden one from
her mother on account of arthritis.

During one of the day excursions they were standing by a
wall looking out over a river and a mugger tried to grab
at auntie's purse.  Well, me dear sweet mum, beat the crap
out of him with grandma's wooden cane!

The apple does not fall from the tree, aye?
