"Opium eradication starts in Afghanistan"

By NOOR KHAN, Associated Press Writer

Fri Feb 23, 2:19 PM ET

"After failing miserably to curb opium production last year, the Afghan government has launched a renewed eradication drive, particularly here in Helmand province — which accounted for more than 40 percent of the 2006's record yield of 6,725 tons. The U.S. government estimates the opium trade generates $3 billion a year in illicit economic activity.

There is some armed resistance to the campaign in Helmand, where drug gangs and Taliban militants form a powerful nexus against President Hamid Karzai's unpopular government. Still, counter-narcotics officials expect better results this year — if not a resounding success."

Well where ever you find G.O.D. you will find the American CIA and then the military  (guns, oil, and drugs)

From the superanuated position I reside in I can say without fear of contradiction that I have heard this line before.
Every year there is some politician who stands up on his or her soap box and declares that they are going to blah blah woof woof ...all that changes is the name of the particular politician.

opium goes back 5000 years- per the silk trail in china.  all drugs were legal in US till 1903 [or 1913]

The CIA flooded LA with crack cocaine on purpose.

WW2  US soldiers fed amphatimines.    -in 1988- mrs dukaucus- made her mission to stop diet pills- as she was "addcited".    so for a few years- they stopped.

At current- air force flight flyers are given amphetamine and [?adrenamlinme/something i feeel is evn more dangerous]   bush1 quietly lightened up on the triplicate rx thing.

in the current war- we can only guess what type of wierd experementation is playing out.

[at least we KNOW what amphetamines are]

The bumper sticker on my car reads "the gas war is over...gas won"  It might just as well say "the war on poverty is over...poverty won"

I believe it was Willie Sutton who, when asked why he kept robbing banks, said "that's where the money is" so too it would seem with god and the cia.

I recall they tried to prevent people from drinking in the 1920s by making it illegal.  I recall it was a dismal failure.  I also recall it was one of the means by which organized crime became organized in the first place; where there is a dollar to be made, people will make it.  Remove the laws, tax the sales of drugs the way we do cigarettes, and watch the illicit drug trade all but vanish into a cloud of commerce.  After all, if there aren't billions of dollars to be made selling it illegally, there won't be people who sell it illegally.

Ahhhh but the moral majority would lose their funding, for the war on drugs ; )

Why is it that in the moral arena commonsense often flies out of the window. or should I say turnstile.

I would say who doesnt agree with stephann, but for all the money we spend on drug enforcement I imagine there are some people who dont agree with him.

Ah, that means that prices will rise in the European markets and that consequently dealers thus will make higher profits and that crime will proliferate, as will prisons and the police state.

Unter de Taliban, drugas, were the DEATH penalty.

Certain people didn't like that, among other things.

Many other things.

Except, of course, if the Taliban had the capacity to manufacture, package, and ship said drugs to the west.  One needn't be a beer drinker, to work in Milwaukee.
