GrandpaLash -> Not-funny - Comedians from Hell (3/22/2005 1:22:40 AM)

My slave, our housemate, and I, were discussing humour tonight, and we got onto favourite and non-favourite comedy acts (not just single comedians). And I thought, what the hell, let's have a poll. I don't know how this will work in this format, though.

Who are your 4 LEAST favourite comedy acts of all time?

Mine, in order of awfulness:

Jerry Lewis
Jim Carey
Bennie Hill
Chevy Chase

I will run a mile to avoid watching them in any way shape or form.

Favourites are a little harder, there are many, but for longevity (in my affections):

The Goons (especially Milligan)
Billy Connolly
Bill Cosby (has his moments)
Tom Lehrer

But funny thing, I actually don't mind Seinfeld all that much. I don't know any of the others you mentioned.

This is kinda hard to answer because there must be plenty that I've jsut filtered out, but I'll list a few I've heard were funny and tried to watch and end up turning off:

Larry the cable guy
Bobcat Goldthwaite or whatever the hell his name is
The current cast of Saturday Night Live (ok, maybe there is 1 in there who is funny)
Dennis Miller (he used to amuse me, but no more)
Andy Kaufman (some stuff funny, but more just weird)

Stuff and folks that crack me up:
the show King of the Hill; South Park too
Carlin, Kinison, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy (doing comedy, not movies), Steve Martin, Rodney Dangerfield. Lewis Black . . . there must be more but I'm drawing a blank so I'll stop.

Oh, and I'll add Penn and Teller -- I think they're funny too.

GrandpaLash -> RE: Not-funny - Comedians from Hell (3/22/2005 7:03:04 PM)

Ah yes, how did I forget Robin Williams. He can replace Cosby on my list. But it is true, the over-the-pond issue will seriously affect this, which is partly why I didn't include two Australian comedians the rest of the world has never heard of (Martin Pearson and Jimiowen). Come to think of it, most Australians will never have heard of Martin. I tried to keep to internationally known acts. Age may also impact: I remember comedians (like Lehrer) who haven't performed since before many of you were born.

Martin and Goldberg, yep, like them, and Monty Python has its moments. I might have included Rowan Atkinson and/or John Cleese except that I only really liked them in Blackadder (Atkinson) and Fawlty Towers (Cleese), plus some of their Python work. Could cheerfully destroy all Bean clips.

Anyway, good to see some responses.

Well, definitely a pattern emerging here ...

sissy Likes cerebral, verbal and logical or surreal based humor; physical humor such as slapstick, funny faces and farting noises have never appealed to him since he was at the age more appropriate to appreciating them ... like 8 years old! One of the things that appeals to sissy about crossdressing is the basic humor associated with a guy in a dress ... but it is more the illogical and paradox that is entailed with it than the campiness that can be involved, which is more physical humor. If his own public crossdressing has taught him anything it is that confidence and attitude gets one immediately accepted. Folks actually like a transvestite with an attitude (such as Tim Curry as Frank-n-Furter, Eddie Izzard or Denis Rodman) rather than one that apologizes for what he is doing (even if only by his abject demeanor). This creates a difficult tension for sissy in a BDSM context where Dom/mes expect sissy to cop an attitude that is typically submissive (i.e., meek and docile) which contradicts the confidence and in-your-face attitude spirit just alluded to. But then again, BDSM dynamics are frequently all about tension, paradox, and contradiction, aren't they ?

sissy's Top ten most hated comedians, from worse to less worse, are ... cue the drum roll ...

Jerry Lewis
- personally, sissy questions how the term "comedian" ever came to be applied to him ... still, he does good work for those kids, i suppose ?
Whoopie Goldberg - sissy is completely baffled at what other really funny guys like Billy Crystal and Robin Williams see in Whoopie ... there has to be some kind of payola involved here!
Carrot Top - you need a little more than a head of shocking red hair to be really funny.
Jim Carrey - pulling not-so-funny faces when you are middle-aged gets a little tiresome.
Janeane Garofalo - sissy likes to say her name (kinda trips off the tongue, doesn't it?) but that's about it ...
Arsenio Hall - have never found this guy's material or delivery funny.
Conan O'Brian - the same as Arse in the Hall but slightly less so.
Chris Farley - too manic, exagerated and over the top ... perhaps David Spade is the only person that found him funny ?
Benny Hill - although he has made sissy chuckle once or twice, where most of the above haven't, sissy can't miss a chance to lend support to all the other thumbs down for Benny here. There is more to humor than bald heads and big breasts! At least that's what mom always told me ... oh wait, that was sex she was talking about!
David Letterman - it's only poetic justice that Letterman end up on a comedy top ten list! sissy Would also nominate Letterman for a short list of bitter and grumpy old men.

and now for sissy's top ten funniest comedians, in reverse order ... the envelope, please ...

Garrison Keillor
- first and foremost, he understands better than most the humor inherent in the human condition ... and he's an English major too!
George Carlin - ditto George WRT the human condition ... "Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath." Hmm, sissy wonders if George was ever into AEA ?
Peter Sellers - "I like to watch" ... reruns of old Pink Panther movies! Although Sellers' humor is primarily physical, there's so much more going on with this comedic master!
Paul Reubens - Paul is an acquired taste ... unfortunately, somewhere in sissy's screwed up past he managed to acquire it! There is something very perverted about Pee Wee Herman that appeals to the kinkster in all of us! Hey, Paul is a convicted pervert ... that makes him AOK in sissy's book!
Spike Milligan - When sissy was a teenager he idolized Spike - the human race is so much the poorer for his demise! Puckoon is the first book that sissy ever read that made him laugh out loud with tears rolling down his cheeks, and for that gift he'll always have a piece of sissy's heart ... "Well, we can't stand around here doing nothing, people will think we're workmen!" (Jeez, two thirds of the Goons made sissy's list ... aaah, Ying Tong Iddle-i-po !)
Steven Wright - some say that his humor, like Dennis Miller's, is too cerebral ... so what's their point ? ... "I can levitate birds. No one cares." ... "I have a decaffeinated coffee table. You'd never know it to look at it." ... "You can't have everything. Where would you put it?"
Les Barker - OK, so he's a poet and folk singer rather than just a standup comedian! The heart and soul of Fairport Convention and Mike Harding lives on in the work of Les Barker (oh, wait a minute, Mike Harding is still going strong too!) ... "Dachshunds with erections can't climb stairs."
Eddie Izzard - the man, the myth, and what a great wardrobe! ... “Yes, I’m a professional transvestite - so I can run about in heels and not fall over cause, uh, you know, if women fall over wearing heels, ah, that’s embarrassing, but if a bloke falls over wearing heels, then you have to kill yourself.” That's SO TRUE !
Tommy Cooper - not only a very, very funny comedian, a brilliant magician too! ... "So I was in my car, and I was driving along, and my boss rang up and he said, 'You've been promoted.' And I swerved. Then he rang up a second time and said, 'You've been promoted again.' And I swerved again. He rang up a third time and said, 'You're the new managing director.' And I went into a tree. When the police arrived, a policeman came up and asked, 'What happened to you?' 'I careered off the road,' I said."
Emo Phillips - this guy just cracks sissy up ... "A friend of mine gave me a Philip Glass record. I listened to it for five hours before I realized it had a scratch on it." ... "Women: You can't live with them, and you can't get them to dress up in a skimpy Nazi costume and beat you with a warm squash."

Respectfrilly Yours,

sissy maid lola

I can't believe that Andrew Dice Clay didn't even get a mention in the list so far. He is the one of the worst in my book. Ugh!

Oh Erin, loosen up babe![;)][sm=lol.gif]
I liked Andrew Dice Clay the way he was initially; I thought he was very funny, because he made everyone laugh at themselves and not take stereotypes so seriously... I saw him live, after getting beaten down by people who took offense to his act, and he wasn't funny any more. M

This is your favorite HATE list, right ? People don't like David Spade, Jim Carrey and Drew Carey ... they either hate them with a passion or are ambivalent to them. But NO ONE actually loves these guys, do they ? Seriously, ruby, do you actually know ANYONE that thinks Jim Carrey or Jerry Lewis are funny ? Unless of course they are French ... the French got their funny bones shot off in the two great wars which is the only way sissy can account for them giving the time of day to Jerry Lewis, let alone lauding him with so many honors. The French actually LIKE mimes ... need sissy say any more ? So the French don't count, OK ?!

sissy Quite likes Rowan Atkinson but mostly for his Black Adder stuff rather than his Mr. Bean role which he can imagine others finding somewhat annoying. sissy Also likes Ellen deGeneres ... but preferred her as a stand-up comic rather than a sitcom star ... that's mostly because sissy detests sitcoms!

quote:

Cant really think of any i dont like - i guess shows like Southpark would be on my dislike list.

Just a minute! ... South Park is one of the best things to happen to abysmal American TV in years ... you'll be telling us next that you don't like Dr. Katz! The only reason that others haven't praised South Park here is that it's a cartoon show and this thread is about "comedians from hell" NOT "cartoons from hell" or "humorous scriptwriters from hell." But if cartoons are allowed to be discussed on this thread then, of course, South Park would be at the top of everybody's posted list of favorites ... that goes without saying. That's why no one said it! Fact is, South Park is no longer just a TV show ... it's more a way of life for America.

sissy Has personally worked at a company where all the employees were allowed to stop work (at around 11 a.m. sissy thinks, can't remember exactly) and go to the main conference room and watch on the large screen TV there the latest episode of South Park on Comedy Central. This was an official personal time period just like a daily lunch break available to every employee. No one had to go watch the show ... you could go do your shopping or make a bank run instead. But that conference room was filled to capacity with over 80% of the staff every single time the latest show was aired. In fact, the only people that didn't make it to the show were probably fighting fires / had deadlines that day, otherwise the turnout would have been nearer 100%. True story. So don't you be knocking South Park from down there in the middle of nowhere ... otherwise the next thing you'll know is that America's exit strategy for Iraq will be via New Zealand! And Mr. Hankey won't be visiting your home next Christmas!

But who the hell is Jack Black? He sounds more like one half of a rock band than a comedian to sissy! Never mind, how funny can he be to someone like sissy that detests Jim Carrey? Why is it, people love to admit they have bad handwriting or that they can't do math ? And they readily admit to being awkward: "I'm such a klutz!" But they will NEVER admit to having a poor sense of humor or being bad drivers ? That thought brought to y'all courtesy of George Carlin.

Curtsies,

sissy maid lola
