I've noticed lately a number of people using the same avatars. Now, it's said that Imitation is the best form of flattery, however, I think it's bad form here.

Many of us who have been on the boards for a while see someone who posts frequently and identifies the poster as we go down the list by their avatar. When those avatars are poached, it becomes confusing.

So, I guess it would be nice if people didn't do it, and respected other's avatars. There are gazillions out there...go find your own ;)

A couple weeks ago someone used the same avatar as myself. I assume they were new and hadn't noticed that I was already using it. At any rate, I haven't seen it used again.

Yes, avatars are a quick way of identifying the author. Its a visual signature. Although my avatar came from a public site I would be puzzled why anyone else would use it here.... since it only creates confusion and a major point of an avatar is to show individuality.

I would expect that who ever had been using the avatar first should be deferred to, and the newcomer find a more unique one. As Lily mentioned there are thousands to choose from - it only takes a bit of time to pick the right one.

When i picked mine from the ones CM provides i didn't even think to look if someone else was using it. I was new to the boards then.

Well, it seems to me that if you're using one of the 'house' avatars, you can expect to share it. There are only so many, and it's not like you created it. If you want a unique visual identifier, make it yourself. I think it's reasonable to expect people to leave that to you, especially if you put a copyright notification on it.

Along similar lines, when I signed up here recently I found that 'my' nick, that I use on a couple of other sites, was already in use here. I just used the first alternative that popped into my head. Probably not brilliant, but what the heck- it's not me, it's an internet nickname.

Perhaps if people considered that many people in real life share the same names and sometimes, to a great degree, appearances, they would relax about how 'unique' their on-line appearance is. If I'm actually interested in what a person has to say, I don't mind looking at their signature- and usually don't have to, after awhile, to identify them.

Geeze, I used one of the avatars offered here. I have no clue if someone else is using it and there certainly aren't any rules listed anywhere that I saw that said two people can't use the same one.

I would say "get over it".

Oh my gosh, there are quite a few avatars 'in house'. I even found the one *I* use.... no wonder that other person was able to pick mine. Here and I was thinking I had some kind of off-the-wall pic when it really is simply off-the-rack. My goodnes... I am going to have to try harder to be unique. [:D]

edit:

I just changed my avatar.

Well, I am in agreement with the notion that if the avatar is something that you pulled from a free graphics site, or chose from those that are offered here, then you are "sharing" it and should expect to have to do so (just like you are by using it).

Mine is original art. I'd prefer not to see someone else using it without permission.

lol, an avatar is a representation of yourself when you're talking to others on a message board.

mine is also a representation of what guys are really talking to in real life also.

Holas!

Just a note on mine as it seems kind of silly. I'm an avid collector of Coca-Cola. Bottles, antiques, etc. I wanted something different than the bdsm avatars floating around CM. I also indulged myself by using an animated gif. I just think it's cute. If people are familiar with Coca-Cola products, they may also deduce the deeper connotation. Besides, the lil bear just looks so adorable....

Stay safe all, play nice, & share your toys w/ others....

While I will not advocate the stealing of avatars, in all fairness with 100,000 people on the board it's impossible for everyone to know what everyone else is using. I got mine off the web and I have another couple that I really like if I need to switch them.

Like someone else said, though, if you use the CM ones you can bet that someone else is going to be using it. I know I got confused when two ladies were using the same avatar and I wrongfully confused them in My posts. How embarassing that was.
