Vendaval -> Renter's insurance for Kink gear and furniture? (2/26/2007 10:19:22 AM)

Greetings A/all,

My neighborhood has had  a rash of breaking and entering robberies
this year.  So I started thinking about insuring my Kink gear in case of
robbery, and realized that everything would have to be not just
listed but photographed as well.  This could potentially be
a problem with your insurer, not sure if they can discriminate
based on what an item is or not.

Any ideas about how to protect your investments?

Regards,

Vendaval

Are you sure it would have to be photographed?  I know that's a nice extra, but not sure if it's necessary.  And really, it's not something I'd be too worried about unless you want to hire your mom as the agent on the policy.

Check your renter's policy. I doubt you will find an exclusion for BDSM items or furniture. There may be a policy limit of payment of any one item. Most policies have limits regarding the value of a specific item such as jewelry or artwork and require a specific 'rider' for those items where an independent appraisal for the replacement value is required.

In the case of lifestyle furniture or toys the only time you'll have to deal with the insurance company is if you declare your custom made elephant foreskin flogger is stolen and you say it's worth $5,000.00. You'll need some support that it was worth that much. Any support you have will help. Pictures are good - receipts are better. In reality the flogger would be treated as any other personal property.

Remember, insurance companies aren't in the payment of claims business, they are in business NOT to pay claims. When you experience a loss be prepared to negotiate. They have people trained to pay as little as possible talking to you. They will come across as trying to "help"; when in reality many are paid bonuses based upon how much less their payment was compared to the underwriting loss estimate.

LA - I was thinking that the items would most likely need to be
photographed because they are not as standardized as say,
a particular make and model of vehicle.  Perhaps a detailed list
would do though; i.e. paddle, 6 inches wide by 12 inches long,
constructed of steel and leather with leather studs.

Mercnbeth - Thank you for the insurance information, that is
really helpful.  I do not have any items worth $5,000 individually
at this point.  It is more about having to replace several individual
items and the collective cost.

I am on several Kink lists for Northern California and know a few people
whose cars have been robbed near a dungeon or play party.
And one friend had his home work-shop broken into and
robbed when he was at Folsom Street Fair.
I think for people who make Kink items both an
alarm system and  insurance would be a necessity.

And just as a reminder, always remember to pack
your gear in the trunk or back of the vehicle where
it is not visible!

One thing to consider when you get insurance on anything.  That provides a tangible record that you actually 'own' said item.

If ever it comes into play legally what things you own, assuming it has any substantial tangible value, if you are required to liquidate your assets, you might be forced to lose things you would prefer not losing.

I know the intent of the OP was toys and such (or that is how I read 'kink gear') which might be small compared to the bigger picture, but sometimes it's nice to know that, theft and fire aside, not legally having something can be a good thing.

If you don't 'have' it, you can't 'lose' it.

And remember folks, for COMMERCIAL USE away from your place of business, ask your agent about INLAND MARINE coverage.
