Same old IRS tactic. Don't try to answer legitimate questions. Go on the attack instead:

You've got me there. And I don't have any idea where or how to start looking. So I've written to Mr. Cryer directly.

If he responds, I'll post it.

You are promoting a fund raising web site.  I wondered whether you believe it enough to send in some cash.  And if so, how committed are you?

The docket number is 06-50164-01, and the case is in the Western District of Louisiana.

The link was sent to me by Joe Bannister, and I posted the link here about 10 minutes after I had read it.

Mr. Cryer is putting everything he owns on the line for something he believes strongly in.

My primary intent wasn't to promote the site as a fundraiser, but rather to point out how the IRS operates. I want people to ask themselves why the IRS simply doesn't respond to polite, sincere questions instead of turning into an 800 pound gorilla and going on the attack.

This is the same tactic they've used against Joe Bannister, Larken Rose, and probably many others. What is the IRS so afraid of? Why would they not be willing to publicly respond to legitimate questions, with the aim of clearing any doubt?

Whether you, or anyone here, should eventually decide to contribute to the cause is a far distant second in my motivation to post.

I personally haven't sent a contribution yet, but I intend to, and I've informed Mr. Cryer as such.

Hrm.  Would seem to me, that if we wanted to avoid paying income taxes, we could simply demand our congress repeal the income tax laws.  That's how most laws are made and eliminated.  Then again, aren't we continuing to elect men and women who perpetuate a system we claim to hate?

Obviously, it's much easier to simply pretend there is no law or constitutional authority to levy taxes.  I have a hard time imagining that my buddy Tom will be 'illegally' put in jail for refusing to pay his taxes.  Considering he is being indicted for tax evasion, it stands to reason he was earning a sufficient income to merit the attention of the IRS in the first place.  I wonder if he'll pay taxes on the donation income he's receiving through the site?

Stephan
