If you want to learn more about bootblacking and the different methods, you should join the Bootblack Forum on Yahoo Groups and I'd be more than willing to talk bootblacking with you. As I'm sure Elegant will as well. Elegant, I must say is one of the best bootblacks in the country and the girl can make suede mirror shine if she had to.

Has anyone checked out BootBlackShop.com and have any feedback? It has lots of unique and antique bootblacking boxes. I was thinking one could make a great Christmas present.

I will admit to having a boot fetish.....though i've never been "trained" or been a part of a bootblacking group, that doesnt' change the enjoyment i get out of the process.....heating the wax, applying and buffing.....Seeing my Owner in well maintained shiney boots....as a small measure of my care and service to him.
<laugh> Also, lets not forget the many ways of worshipping those beautiful boots!

As the owner of a well respected bootblack I will say this one thing. There are multiple right ways and there are multiple wrong ways to black boots. There is more to it than just making whatever boot is presented to you shine.

Some "wrong" ways I have seen attempted
"bake on shine"
Mop and glow
Hubbards on high shines
Kiwi on oil tans

Not knowing anything beyond that you have taken good care of your Sir's boots for a few years I can't say for sure what you are doing is wrong or right for blacking boots of other folks in a bar. These are two very different tasks. Do take BootBlack Blast's advice and join the yahoo group so you can get more information about the various techniques and tools used for the various types of leather you see when you black in a public setting.

Free advice worth exactly what you paid for it.

....Kiwi smudged high fives to Blast!.....

There are Bootblacks and there are people who shine shoes. Two different things!

Bootblacking is the art and knowledge of caring for leather, most commonly leather boots. Bootblacking is more than just polishing a pair of boots: it can involve the cleaning, conditioning, dyeing and polishing of all leather items

Being able to shine a pair of boots does not make one a Bootblack. A Bootblack has often devoted many hours to training, product evaluation and practice. He is able to give knowledgeable suggestions about leathercare and often shares information to others who wish to learn about the art.

Bootblacking is done by a myriad of people regardless of their sexual orientation, relationship status, race, age, gender or gender presentation, leather orientation.

Bootblacks usually offer...
  • Knowledgeable leathercare
  • A relaxing and comfortable experience
  • Personal attention!

Bootblacks don't always offer...
  • Sex, touching, bootlicking and/or a BDSM scene:Not all bootblacks shine erotically or want the experience to become a power exchange.

As to 'right' ways and what your owner wants you to do.....

Yes, there are some correct and incorrect techniques when it comes to proper boot care. Unfortunately, our military personnel were usually only taught to shine boots to pass inspection. (Trivia: Parade Gloss was so named because it makes boots super shiny for morning inspections on the parade grounds. it contains silicone..a whole 'nother subject). Most military personnel were/are not taught proper techniques for long term care of boot/footwear. So, while some products and techniques might give boots a lovely appearance the long term results could be detrimental.

Don't use Kiwi (or another wax based polish) on your soccer/football boots. The movement of the foot and shoe will cause the polish to crack and flake too easily. Clean well, let dry and then keep them well conditioned with a product such as Pecards or a dubbin (Not sure what is available in the Netherlands but if you want I can try to find out)

pecards is beeswax based  isnt it?

it works very well

i like to use beeswax on anything with stitching.

i was also wondering how others felt about mink, bear, or other animal fat dressings. i do not use them myself.

i definitely agree there is more to it than slapping on some black and using a brush. if your master is happy with your performance, that should be good enough. if you want to do this publicly, there is some great advice on here, and you should be able to find what you need hopefully.
