Historically that is the only term used to define it. Even though the Gov states it is separate from "the church" it has its foundings in a religious base. Actually I think your idea would be the best all around. Your right, imo, the government should have no right to define what is or is not a legtimate relationship.

Actually Aquatic here in Vermont, they have all the same rights and recognition as an opposite sex marriage. It is when it comes to the federal government that the status of civil union is ignored.

The problem comes when the government is forced to define a relationship to give certain benefit..like taxes, etc.
If "A" is allowed to have certain benefits and breaks and legal rights, then there must be a defininition of "A".
