It is sleeting in Seattle, will this winter never end!

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Winter (2/28/2007 4:38:25 PM)

Winter ended a week ago here.

Yeah, it's been in the 60's and 70's the past week or two.  But I think it's supposed to rain with highs only in the 50's the next couple of days.

'Winter', as most people would think of it, only lasts the better part of two months.

WyrdRich -> RE: Winter (2/28/2007 5:12:26 PM)

      I've always felt there are three realistic ways to deal with February in the Pacific Northwest.

    1)  Hide.  Don't stay out of your home one minute more than you have to.  Why do you think exotic beers and other intoxicants are so popular up there?

    2)Accept and Embrace.  Live in your long johns, take walks when the rain slows to a thick drizzle (supposedly, the negative ions created by the rain compensate for the lack of sunshine, and ward off depression), build a fire, turn off all the lights and just listen to the rain.

    3)  Flee.  Move someplace where the sun shines 345 days a year.  I miss Portland, but not at this time of year.

We have talked about fleeing to the Eureka area because that is as far south as we can afford to flee without ending up in Mexico.

Doesn't look like it, but i did play golf yesterday.  Did you see the pictures of that 50 car accident on Snoqualmie Pass?[:o]

MistressDiane -> RE: Winter (2/28/2007 6:25:11 PM)

Winter is coming to an end here. I've been noticing subtle changes such as the sun coming up earlier and the horses are beginning to shed their winter coats. The lows in the temperature aren't as low as they were and the highs are getting higher. Hang in there!!

SilverShadows -> RE: Winter (2/28/2007 7:40:24 PM)

50 car accident! Gees. Bet that makes a mess of our major pass.

CalliopePurple -> RE: Winter (2/28/2007 8:58:40 PM)

I moved to the area (just outside Tacoma here) in December, so I've been around in time for all of this year's insanity. Keep in mind I came from Florida, and the Midwest before that.

If I can endure hurricanes and tornados and afternoon thunderstorms that shake the trailer, I can endure random fits of sleet that start just as I'm opening a book at the bus stop. But I don't like it much.

Winter blues? Look at the bright side. You'll appreciate the other seasons more for having suffered through winter.

Also, consider this. I recall reading some years ago that Hawaii had the highest suicide rate per capita of all states... and it has one of the most spectacular climates on the planet.

Anyone remember that old Twilight Zone episode where everything the man did worked out perfectly? He sunk every shot on the pool table. People laughed copiously at every joke he told. His drink was always filled. Everyone adored him. Any woman would have him. He encountered no problems, resistance, or challenges whatsoever. At the end of the episode, he came to realize that he was in hell.

soultoshare -> RE: Winter (3/1/2007 1:08:04 AM)

I grew up on the shores of Lake Ontario...survived the winters of '77 and '78.  Lived in the Chicago area for about 7 years.......gave it all up and moved to Phoenix......as I watched the last bout of storms move thru the central NY area, i called my family at home, told them it was sunny and 65....they all hung up on me.  No sense of humor, I guess!

Of course, two months from now, we folks here will be "hibernating" from summertime.  But it's true, it IS a dry heat here, and I love it....just slather on the SPF 45 sunscreen, and I'm off!  There's a reason why they call Nature a Mother!

Termyn8or -> RE: Winter (3/1/2007 1:59:18 AM)

subfever, I remember it vivdly. IIRC it was Sebastian Cabbot said "This IS the other place".

Now who remember the episode (not TZ, but something similar) where the world's orbit got screwed up and was heading for the sun and it was getting hotter and hotter ? Like a post war era things were all screwed up and there was only power for a few hours a day.

As it came out in the end the Woman was dreaming it all, in reality the Earth was moving away from the sun and she said "The cool, isn't it beautiful ?" when she came to.

They reran both the TZs and the Outer Limits on cable a few years ago while I was at work. I never caught that episode again, perhaps it was One Step Beyond ?

And wasn't there one more of those freaked out shows that only lasted a couple of seasons, I can't think of it.

I'm starting to think this is a big enough can of worms for it's own thread.
