It is a sad moment in this country when the powers that be think they can, and are, controlling what comes out of our mouths. On the heels of New York making the 'n' word illegal, comes the "It's so gay!" debate:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17388702/?GT1=9145

Is making certain phrases and words illegal the right way to teach sensitivity? Or are we all just too sensitive already, and don't have enough backbone to let a slur slide off our skin? What a pathetic, weak and judgemental ( not to mention litigious ) society we are becoming. Please people, just chill out!

So long as there are lawyers who stand to make millions, there will be laws enacted to make activities illegal.

Somewhere in the middle, society will figure out the reality.

At what point is 'hate' speech protected by the first amendment?  Every point, so long as it doesn't present a clear and present threat (yelling fire in a crowded theater.)

If people do not stand up for unpopular speech, only saying what is popular will be allowed. There are many things that people say that I find disgusting. I can tell them so, as long as they are not harassing or threatening me with their speech (like telling me they are going to kill me or threatening to blackmail me) I do not wish to stop people from saying what they please in public by incarcerating them.

I think both sides here are being asinine (actually, I think that about a lot of debates). Banning verbal speech of any kind is simply tyrannical. Tolerating speech that we don’t like, or even find offensive, is part and parcel of freedom. This doesn’t mean that I condone certain nasty words and phrases but to me it is a matter of civility – it should not be a matter of law. Indeed, the fact that the kind of people who would use such words and phrases are allowed to gives the rest of us a convenient way to spot the assholes amongst us.

As for the young lady who got into trouble at school and who’s parents sued, well, I can understand the school wanting to teach civility – the student should be made to understand that even though she did not mean to put down gay people, her comments could be heard as such – but is it really neccessary to put this in her record? Will this incident be seen by college admissions people? If so, I can understand why her parents are suing but otherwise it looks to me like they are making a mountain out of a molehill.

Kind of funny really, here they are making more words or phrases illegal, and the courts are over turning laws against using profanity in public. Citing the individuals right to free speech.   I can remember an older quote, just cant remember who it is quoting, that said...."I may not agree with a single word that you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it".........I agree with the OP, maybe we need to stop being so sensitive to what is being said.  After all......."sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me".

It's one thing to sue someone, it's quite another to collect!
Many people don't say things because they "think they'll be sued."
If you're poor or "average" financially, how is someone going to get anything if the person their suing doesn't have much?
My lawyer told me once; "if you're going to sue someone make sure they have money first or a lawyer won't take the case."
Also, a plaintiff rarely wins a first amendment case so say what you like.

P.S. it's not against the law to "offend" anyone.

The "funny" thing about the use of the N word as far as I can see is that in the public arena it is mostly used by black "comedians" I have in mind one particular rat faced individual whose "act" consists of a stream on N and F words.

I wouldn't post his/her name even if knew it after that lol.
Only in America.

This wont fly.

Slang is constantly changing, groovey man.  Fancy that. wazzup. whatitbe. and so on.

formal english is not formal- we are evolving into fragment attn spans-fast-

so laws to control speech are sorta pointless.  The State park workers- whom I pay in part their salary refer to the gays as "undesirables".

Whatever.

The key componet about speech is intent on malice/harrassment.

Whats wrong with a bit of malice ? It may well be deserved.
There is no way that we are all going to love one another. is there ?

Then is a well (equally) armed society of nations a polite world?

I'd like to know if the other kids were reprimanded.

Is it okay to make fun of ones religion, but not their sexual orientation?

There are a number of people who need thicker skins. Just this week a college student accused my Dominant of harrassing her because He corrected her homework paper. It was dismissed later by the Dean, but talk about being harrassed!!!
