I think both sides here are being asinine (actually, I think that about a lot of debates). Banning verbal speech of any kind is simply tyrannical. Tolerating speech that we don’t like, or even find offensive, is part and parcel of freedom. This doesn’t mean that I condone certain nasty words and phrases but to me it is a matter of civility – it should not be a matter of law. Indeed, the fact that the kind of people who would use such words and phrases are allowed to gives the rest of us a convenient way to spot the assholes amongst us. As for the young lady who got into trouble at school and who’s parents sued, well, I can understand the school wanting to teach civility – the student should be made to understand that even though she did not mean to put down gay people, her comments could be heard as such – but is it really neccessary to put this in her record? Will this incident be seen by college admissions people? If so, I can understand why her parents are suing but otherwise it looks to me like they are making a mountain out of a molehill.
