wonderful!!!!!   i am writing a play about BDSM and one of the characters lost her job beascue she was outed....congrats on being so brave (i could never hand my play into a prof.).....well....maybe i will someday

FukinTroll -> RE: Help An Artist Please? (3/2/2007 12:04:52 AM)

kate, that sounds like a brilliant project. I think a cool twist is not letting the audiance know what the "outing" was about untill the end. Let them speculate around the obvious.

StellaByStarlite -> RE: Help An Artist Please? (3/2/2007 6:06:36 AM)

Hey, Aquatic. =)

What an incredible thing you're doing, first of all! It takes a lot of guts to stretch the comfort levels of other people to make them think.

You might be interested in these series of articles covering the movie " Cruising". It came out in 1980, so I think it was a little before your time. ;) But it was controversial for it's time. The setting was in the gay leatherbar scene, very dark and grim. Not the best PR for the gay scene, much less the BDSM one.

Here's the website:
http://velvet_peach.tripod.com/fpaccruising.html

I think I did that correctly, if you can't get there let me know.

Since BDSM as a negative is a common theme in movies, try checking out articles and reviews about some. 8MM is a good one, too.

Keep us posted and goodluck!
Stella

Wow Aqua, that's a really powerful project and I didn't know about that for you and it brings a delicious depth to your personality.  Try looking up NCSF and all the stuff they have.

*blushes* Thank you. Right now I'm not sure where it's going to go, but I've had the idea of using various "manuals" in the piece and then having intact copies that my classmates (or whoever) can browse through to learn about what I do, what others do and why we do it.

Ms Ariel in MD here in collarme is a founding member of the Woodhull Freedom Foundation.
She may also have some input that would be benificial.
I'd recommend you writeing her and asking her for suggestions as well.

Again you are starting an argument that you might not be able to justify or really defend...I think that since one can be dicriminated against for participating in wiitwd..maybe your collage should be about the stupidity of those that have been caught....Or maybe you should open with a HUGE EXHIBIT...DEDICATED....To PONY PLAY!!!!!...Nothing says treat me with equality as one clops through mud and shit with a tail rammed up their ass...lol.

Please take this to heart.  I know that my posts can be construed as being just silly..but this is good advice...and remember you have to stand behind and defend what you present....Do you really want to defend all that falls under BDSM?.

meatcleaver -> RE: Help An Artist Please? (3/2/2007 8:59:53 AM)

This might sound a little hackneyed but you really should read up on Maquis de Sade. He was a magistrate in the French revolution, very human in his judgements and something of a libertarian, he hated the hypocrisy of his class and abored their violence. There in is a good metaphor for modern politicians and their gross hypocrisy. De Sade is much more than a  sadist (he was actually a switch, he enjoyed a bit of masochism too), his politics were very interesting and more modern in outlook than most of today's politicians.

ferryman777 -> RE: Help An Artist Please? (3/2/2007 9:18:30 AM)

The 'infamous' Marqis de Sade;.....knowing in real life many sm/bd modern day rag publishers, who tout the Marquis as a pervert, attribute all sorts of perversions to Sade, have in fact NEVER read one sentence of Sade's work, nor know anything whatsoever of Sade's history. They just throw the Marquis about in every manner of sorted and diseased tortures (of course with the most beautiful slaves a cameraman can hire) one could imagine, of course to sell their slime rags and videos.
Sade was imprisoned because he was a reactionary revoltionist in his day, he brought to light the hypocrisies of his elitist peers. His peers supplied Sade, while imprisoned under the veil of 'insanity', with all the ink and paper he wanted, to write to his heart's content; only to burn what he wrote. What we have of his work, is that which he managed to smuggle out to his wife; only bits and fragments . His prosecutors maligned Sade and saw to it his name would be forever linked with the insane perversions they, themselves were guilty of; thereby discrediting Sade, personally, along with his writings.
Anyone who takes the bother to actually read that which Sade wrote; will come away with a very different picture of that which is thusly painted.

Isn't that like saying do you want to defend all lesbians since some of them are nuts and do things that embaress you?

Read Page 69 of "When Someone You Love is Kinky."  It's a letter written by a friend of mine after she was fired from her school job on a reservation because her boss discovered a handful of emails to her Master.

I hadn't thought about using that book, but now that it's been mentioned I really should look into it... The only problem with this project is that it's going to cost me so much money to get all these books.

sleazy -> RE: Help An Artist Please? (3/2/2007 2:13:32 PM)

Aqua, some of deSades publications are available as free e-books. I shall try dig out where I got a couple from for you over the weekend.

AquaticSub -> RE: Help An Artist Please? (3/2/2007 4:23:34 PM)

That would be really nice. I've thought about seeing if I can contact the writers of the various books I want to use and going "I'm using them as an art project, I don't suppose you have some copies laying around that you would like to send me?" *insert big sweet smile here*

Yeah I know it's unlikely to pay off... but sometimes you just have to try!

sleazy -> RE: Help An Artist Please? (3/2/2007 4:33:51 PM)

http://www.globusz.com/ebooks/120Days/ is the first I dug out of the archive for you Aqua, not a true e-book but hopefully of use.

I think the last time I collected them it was actually from http://www.olympiapress.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=21_40 at a buck a volume the price is not as scary as heading into your local bookstore, but then they just dont have the same feel.

No it is nothing like that!  You can be discriminated against solely based on your sexual preferences....Lesbian normal or crazy same result.....If people want to discriminate against BDSM'ers I can understand why they would.
Have you seen the reduction in pics since it was made known that someone was showing how they could be retrieved off of this site?....I speak I believe for the majority who agree that wiitwd is nothing they take particular "pride" in, it is what it is....For the most of us this is kept hidden away from public viewing....Not becuase we are fearing discrimination...Just cause we know there are aspects of this that are pretty damn creepy and hard to explain to others.

sophia37 -> RE: Help An Artist Please? (3/2/2007 5:48:25 PM)

Why dont you paint yourself with a big gag over your mouth and your hands tied behind your back, in a setting that says something about you or whats important to you.

Then, go to the" lifestyles in the news" section of this website and read newspaper clippings on how shocking and kinky or whatever other words the press uses, to decribe sexual practices outside the norm.

Take snipets from all the articles and see if they end up making a story of their own. Then take the "story" and paste it in such a way that it becomes your body on the canvas. Why not let people "read you". You'll be speaking on a multitude of levels and what with the gag in your mouth, you havent said one thing. Beleive me, people would react to the image and story in whatever way defines their own thinking.

I offer you this idea as one artist to another. Good luck. xoxoxo Sophie

It's an idea, but I really don't want to be that "in your face" about it. I'm not sure exactly what I'll be doing but I think I'll be avoiding people all together. The more I think about this, the more I want to focus on only the d/s and simply avoid sex and kink for the moment.

If your professor does not believe that this is an issue facing artists (or scene people), please direct her to photographer Barbara Nitke's website, and her challenge to the Communications Decency Act: http://www.barbaranitke.com/aboutlawsuit.html

Thanks for the link. I'm thinking of typing up my idea as a proposal and giving that to her instead of explaining it in front of the class.
