I don't see a problem with buying energy from Russia, it is like everything in life, you don't over relay on one source. Putin might not be a model democrat but he wants money more than he wants to rule the world.

Japan and Russia have never made good neighbours, after all the Japanese have attempted invasion with the aim of capturing the mainly untapped resource reserves of Siberia in the past.
