FirmhandKY -> The Missing Dollar (3/3/2007 11:39:00 AM)

Three men checked into a cheap hotel where the night clerk charged them $30 for the night.  Each man contributed $10.

Later. when the manager was reviewing the records, he realized that the cost of the room should have only been $25, so he grabbed a clerk, gave him $5 in singles, and told him to return the money to the men.

The clerk, realizing that three men were going to have trouble evenly dividing up 5 singles between them, decided to take $2, and gave the men the remaining $3 (he was doing them a favor, you understand. [:D])

Now, here's the question:

Each man paid $10 originally, and got back a dollar, so in reality, actually paid $9 each.  3 x 9 = $27.

The clerk kept $2.

$27 + $2 = $29

Where did the other $1 go?

It vanished into a hole in the logic when you multiplied by three.

Original money - $30
Room cost - $25
Clerk - $2
Refund - $3

Room cost + clerk + refund = original money
$25            + $2     + $3      = $30

-----------------------------------------------------
Or, to put it another way:

Room cost  + Clerk's "tip" = Actual cost
$25             + $2               = $27  (9x3)

The trouble is that you are double counting the $2 in the original question and not counting the three.

The men paid $27.00 for the room, you do not ADD $2 to that for the answer, as it is STILL part of what was paid.  $25 was COLLECTED for the room, and the other $2 went to the clerk. (so, $27 MINUS $2 equals $25 ... but since it has already been factored, we leave it alone.)

So, they have PAID $27 ($25 to the manager, $2 to the cleark), and now each have $1 in their pockets (total of $3.)

They PAID $27, plus the $3 they now have left, and there never was  amissing dollar.

two men actually  paid  8.33 one paid 8.34  the fact the clerk stole 2 dollars is irrelevant
