LadyEllen -> The T in LGBT means? (3/4/2007 12:54:35 PM)

Hi All

This is your chance to assist in resolving a very important question that came up at yesterday's police advisory group meeting. I'm throwing it out here, as what I want is answers from non "T" people as much as from "T" people, since its a question of terminology and whats important is what is understood out there by terms, not what the terms are taken to mean within the specialist "T" world.

What I need to ask, is what do you take the T in LGBT to denote? The choices offered are two;

1) Trans
2) Transgender

The T we need, is the T which is most inclusive and preferably all inclusive, for the purposes of the advisory group's work, as the T aspect for the group includes all cross gender behaviours; crossdressing/transvestism of all types, and gender transitions arising from gender identity disorders of all types.

The problem we have, is that theoretically, Trans can be taken to mean everyone and everything, but doesnt particularly denote anyone or anything, whilst Transgender often specifically denotes a person with gender identity disorder who has changed social gender but has not yet had surgery to alter physical sex or doesnt seek surgery at all, but also seems to be gaining currency as an umbrella term that includes transvestism too.

And of course, if anyone has another idea of what the T in LGBT could stand for apart from Trans or Transgender, then this would be interesting too.

Thanks in advance

E

Erm.. I don't even know what LGB means much less the T.

Interesting answers so far! This is important for the police, people, and then for the people themselves.

LGBT = Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, T........ for those who dont know. Its sometimes also written GLBT.

We need the right terminology as someone has come along and recommended changing the term we use. This has implications, in that a change would have to be made to all recruit training materials and all procedure documents for the police when dealing with T.......... people, whether as victims, witnesses, suspects, advisors etc. It also has potential legal implications, in that unless we use a term that is understood to be an umbrella term, then some elements of the T........ "community" (if there is one) might not be covered by the safeguards etc we as a group have put in place over the past three years in respect of the treatment of T........ people.

In the context of 'LGBT,' the T basically always stands for Transgender.

"Transgender" is the umbrella term for transsexuals, crossdressers, and transvestites. Being all inclusive, this doesn't always work well for transsexuals, who are already subject to being lumped in with fetishists.

"Trans" is simply a shortening of transsexual, which is the word for those with "gender indentity disorder."
"Trans" is primarily used as a slang adjective; for example, "trans woman" is often used to describe mtfs and "trans man" used to describe ftms. Although I hear it all the time, I don't feel that use of "trans" as a noun on its own really works (as in: "She is a trans") and I will often correct people when appropriate. "She is trans" does work though.

I have lived in 4 major cities since starting transition and have never heard of the term "trans" being used exclusive to a certain demographic of transsexuals (ie. pre/non-op), like you say. However, "trans" does usually imply transsexual as opposed to CD/TV, simply because to most people, it is a shortening for transsexual; not "transgender."

Thankyou for the explanation btw.

You're welcome.
Glad I could help!

kindaeasy69 -> RE: The T in LGBT means? (3/4/2007 1:39:41 PM)

I’ve always understood the “T” to mean transsexual, but it seems that I’m incorrect.  I think I first hear it in the early to mid 90’s so perhaps it’s already changed?  That said, to me whether it is transsexual or transgendered, I have always considered it to include anyone in the community, pre or post op, as well as those who have no intention of having surgery, etc.

Of course I doubt my views would do much go in court but that is how I have always looked at it.

Did I answer you question at all?

Thanks Kindaeasy - all useful!

windchymes -> RE: The T in LGBT means? (3/4/2007 2:48:26 PM)

Transgender was my first guess...even before I read the responses!  Really!

SilverShadows -> RE: The T in LGBT means? (3/4/2007 3:54:38 PM)

The T refers to transgendered which includes anyone has a significant identification with their non-birth gender. That includes Transexuals (pre-op & no-op, according to the DSM IV TR Revised it would not include post-op since they are "cured"), CDs (Transvestites), transgenderists (People living full time in their gender of choice but without reassignment surgury. Sort of the CD version of a no-op), GEMs/GEF (Gender inhanced males/females), shemales/hefemales, etc. It would not include Drag Queens or Kings.

Trans would generally be taken to mean a FtM or MtF or transexual.

As for Sissy's they are beyond my expertise. I think you would have to poll that community on how they identify.

LMAO - that should be on a t-shirt

HydroMaster -> RE: The T in LGBT means? (3/4/2007 5:54:06 PM)

I would think it means transgender...would trans by itself even mean anything?  It's just a chunk of a word.  So I'm going with transgender.

bearincuffs -> RE: The T in LGBT means? (3/4/2007 6:03:28 PM)

T in LGBT is Transgendered, my sis is transgendered

Hydro, many people do use the term trans as opposed to transgender to mean the same thing. I know some who fing trans is derogatory and others don't. It's seems to be more of a personal preferrence.

sophia37 -> RE: The T in LGBT means? (3/4/2007 6:29:26 PM)

Yup. I thought it was transgender-ed. Not transgender. He is a trangender? He has been transgenderd?

LadyEllen -> RE: The T in LGBT means? (3/5/2007 2:22:44 AM)

Thanks all - seems pretty conclusive that Transgender(ed) is the runaway "winner" with 84% of the vote!

sleazybutterfly -> RE: The T in LGBT means? (3/5/2007 3:37:59 AM)

I have always thought of it being "trans", but to me that was transgender.  I don't think a lot of people know the difference between transsexual and transgender, and would clump them together.  I feel that sometimes trans (gender) people are left our of the LGBT equation by the others that are in it.  I am not sure why that is, but hopefully with shows about it, showing the real lives of those with the "disorder" (as it is referred to sometimes), we as a LGB community can learn to not only accept, but embrace the T on the end.
