My brother is in the Army.  He got back from Iraq in late October.

He will not speak about much in Iraq, for many reasons.

Once, he told me about the children.  He used to gather up some of the local children, and bring them to his trailer and play video games with them.  One day, when one of the boys had beat him in some game with guns and what not, he turned in utter fear to my brother and asked " Nice Mister, you will not kill me, too?"  Floored, my brother looked at him and asked him what he meant. "You are nice, Mister, but your people kill my family."   My brother asked him about this, and the boy told him that his father, grandfather and uncles had all been killed.  He asked the other boys huddled in his trailer who had stories like this and 7 out of 9 boys admitted that most of their male relatives had been killed.

My brother, though very right wing, at that point only wanted to get out of there.  He is still haunted, and nothing we as his family can do for him alleviates that.  More Iraqis are dying than we either document or give a damn about.

Puella, it sounds like the reality of war. If an army is sent somewhere, civilians are going to be killed including leaving kids parentless, homeless etc. It can't be good for soldiers involved because they have to live with that - it goes without saying that we're all human, regardless of political affiliation.

A group of British soldiers were caught on camera kicking the shite out of young kids in Iraq. It was there for all to see and at least two of the soldiers were clearly heard laughing their heads off and they seemed to be getting a real thrill from the whole experience.

On your brother being right-wing, I think we're leading parallel lives......my sister left Britain to live in Dubai - partly to reduce her tax bill, my dad was in the RAF (they all vote conservative because they direct funding towards defence), my mum and the rest of my family are ardent royalists.....the queen makes a speech on TV at 3pm every Christmas day here...I once considered phoning a child abuse helpline because I had to sit through it before I was old enough to do my own thing :-) I keep telling them that what they don't see is the queen training her corgis to attack the poor and what they don't understand is that she shot diana in the face, at close range, in a tunnel in Paris (all because diana's butler ran off with a couple of silver spoons from buckingham palace).

I think we can all agree that Clinton had a certain amount of charm, whether not or he was sincere is a different story.

Hello NorthernGent,

Yes, some of the horror stories of troop behavior are very dismaying indeed.  From what I had gathered from my brother, who would not discuss troop misbehavior with me in anything resembling an in depth way, due to the sort of loyalty code most soldiers hold themselves to, the kids he was dealing with were not talking about single soldiers employing terror in rogue-like fashion, but rather, they had much family that was killed by bombings and who had and were still being round up in the continual sweeps which take place in the cities, from which, few return home... whether they are killed or just locked up somewhere was not explained either to or by my brother.

What really worries me about what my brother told me is two things.  Firstly of course, my brother.  Of course my entire family is beyond grateful and relieved that he has come back physically unharmed from Baghdad, but he has been irrevocably changed.  He can be quite stoic sometimes, for no apparent reason and I can see him struggling silently over things at times, and I do not feel it  is appropriate to ask him to share that with me.. there is a lot that we who do not go and serve will never be able to understand about what their sacrifice really meant, and what the realization that they were sent there under less than appropriate circumstances has really done.  From what I know of my brother and his friends, there does not seem to be the rationale that those who question the political motivations of the administration are questioning their service, thankfully.

The second very disturbing thought that my brother's story creates in me is that we are actually creating an entire generation of people who fear and despise us in such a fundamental way that we should be very very concerned.  It is not just the kids percept on of their missing family, it is the warnings of their mothers and remaining family, the conversations they overhear from them regarding the occupation and loss of their loved ones at our invasion and the horrible effects of the door to door raids and the horror stories of Abu Ghraib and the like which circulate among all the citizenry and create the formative environment for these kids.

It is alarming.

And yes, back to Clinton, though I refuse to deify a man whom I think is much more than a cad, he did do many good things, and he did have charm and charisma, and that was well used , especially in foreign diplomacy.

Yanno, I thought Concord was the shot heard 'round the world, now Houghton-Mifflin has to recall a bunch of their history books and paste some text over that chapter.

Hi Puella,

It's hard to gauge the extent of support for terrorism caused by Afghanistan and Iraq with the climate of fear, misinformation etc. Our security services are telling us we are the number one target, primarily because we have a muslim community largely drawn from Pakistan. They claim they have foiled umpteen terrorist plots in Britian - with all the politics and spin, it's hard to know what is going on. I'd estimate a terrorist attack is more of a threat because of Iraq, but not to the extent we are being led to believe.

What happens when the US and British forces withdraw? It will happen, too many soldier deaths = serious public pressure and careers on the line. It's a case of how many people have to die. The question is: will the freedom fighters/insurgents/terrorists leave it there, or will they target the US itself. After all, their ultimate goal is no western intervention in the Middle East and if they're generating the support we're led to believe they are, then they will have the resources to keep going until they get their wish. Maybe it's propaganda, time will tell.

Don't make me laugh. If their "ultimate goal" was no western intervention in the Middle East, then their murdering 3000 civilians on 9/11 backfired on them rather severely, didn't it. No, as 9/11 proved, their ultimate goal is an infidel-free planet.

Just ask yourself, how long the beheading has been going on so far, and why would their long-term goal have changed now.

It hasn't.

You of course realize that even the Bush administration admits that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, yes?

The point is NOTHING the U.S. has done since 9/11 has resulted in ANYONE connected directly to 9/11 being brought to justice.

( And let me add, the 400 Billion would have gotten us total energy independence, which WOULD have taken ALL the power out of the Oil Families, and we could just turn our back on them and let them deal with the lack of market for their only export. )

( And didn't we move the troops out of Saudi Arabia? )

As we left Afghanistan, where Bin Laden was, and will never go after Saudi Arabia, from which the vast majority of the hijackers came, that leaves Iraq, where we are now, and which had absolutely nothing to do with 9/11.

No, puella. The subject was the ultimate goal of jihad, not George Bush and Iraq - unless we're playing some weird game where each successive post is supposed to completely change the subject.

If that's the case, then you and farglebargle are right on track.

I read today on Yahoo News that Halliburton went to Dubai for the same reason.

Apparently, the company objected paying taxes on the zillions of dollars they are fleecing the United States government out of.

We greatly reduced the number of our troops in Afghanistan to support the invasion and occupation of Iraq, luckydog, and as Bush said... just really were not worried about Saddam Hussein... anymore.

Our occupation of Iraq, falsely claming they had anything to do with anything remotely concerning jihadists (they were a secular nation under Saddam, and his presence in the region was one of the reasons why there were no Islamic extremists being created in that region) has created a hot bed for Islamic fundamentalist radicals, and has so increased the level of anger and hatred for our nation in that entire region, that it truly IS terrorizing to think of.

The Halliburton moving offshore thing should offend every American. I think a company we've given so much of our tax dollars to, and the job they do FOR our troops, should have Alligence to the United States.

We should cancel all their contracts, if they move. AMERICAN TAX DOLLARS are for AMERICAN COMPANIES.

Hussein was REALLY GOOD at supressing the kinds of people we see rising to the top today in Iraq. We should have left Iraq's internal affairs to Iraq. If they wanted to change their government, they could have had a revolution at any time.

Ponder this, farglebargle...

Due to our policy, no American company can do business in or with Iran... Halliburton, by moving to Dubai is now no longer an American company.... which... makes you wonder what's coming round the corner.

Follow the money....

Yeah, I'm waiting for the donkeys to show some balls over this.

And I think it was a REALLY stupid move on Halliburton's part.
