Irishm57 -> Intersting Toy - ball and chain (3/6/2007 3:53:02 PM)

Every so often i go looking around for something and find something far from what i seek. A few years ago i had bought the electric winch for my bondage frame from a company in california. And today while i was look for something , i saw these "decorative ball and chains " and thought cool. I know some people like memorabilia type things. I know it is only a 5 and half inch ball , but it is made of cast aluminum. so i am guessing it is hollow and could have a hole drilled in it and filled with lead shot to weigh it down, and at only 9.99 each , i figured i would share this find .. ( i bought a few for a laugh)

Many sporting good shops sell bowling balls, and have a few that where mis-drilled. Get some black epoxy and plug the holes, insert an eyebolt in one, and let it set. A file can be used to smooth out the exposed epoxy and roughen up the outside of the ball for that old look. Add a chain and you will have a nice ball and chain with some weight to it. I found my bowling ball in the trash outside the store one night.

i like the idea, but upon checking out the item on the site you listed i saw that the shackle opening is only 2-3/8".  i'm not positive, but isn't that only large enough for a wrist?  i believe 2-3/8" is a bit small for an ankle considering that the shackle in question looks like a Darby cuff - shaped like a "D" with a curve on one side and flat on the other.

i'd be curious to know when you get them if they will fit an ankle.

We used to resell them.  The blacksmith used a shot put for the ball.  About 19 pounds as I recall.  Plus the weight of the chain and shackle.  Not as dramatic, but Humane Restraint  makes a twenty pound leg weight that locks around the ankle.

Well they arrived today. I had thought the ball was hollow, it isn't it is pretty solid, and weighs around 6 pounds. It actually seems heavier. But it does look nice. I suppose dragging it around for a while it would feel heavier. Definitely not good for a wood floor or linoleum floor.
The Shackle is another story. If it was functional, they made sure it isn't anymore. They peened over the hinge so it doesn't "hinge" anymore. And the end where the pin should come out so you can open the hinge, is peened over also. It looked like a human did it , since all the punch marks are out of round. But for the fun of it, i will take my dremel to it later .
It even has warnings on the label saying don't attempt to make shackle functional. And do not use on humans or animals. lol

I've a friend on the renfair circuit who's got a supplier for old-world shackles, leg cuffs and an empty (but fillable) Ball and chain w/ functional leg shackle! Good prices, and durable to boot (unlike aluminum or other soft goods)! If you'd like, let me know and I'll send ya some pics and prices of them.[:)]

Wishing you good fortune in your search, LeatherWolffe.

Hi - My partner and I were visiting Whitby Abbey (On East coast of England) and visited the English Heritage Gift Shop. They to had the perfect ball & chain in a showcase. With much mirth all round we asked to try them, but as yours the ball was much to light to be effective.but your idea of drilling and filling could solve this.
However what they did have was sets of medieval handcuffs and these are perfect..  Again much mirth and no one could fathom out how the they locked. After some experiment. the key just releases. They are in our dungeon on active service now
