Just curious, why is it that the missionaries were concerned about sexual positions?  This has always seemed like a very strange thing to worry about.

Tis a religious thing. Believing sex is a bad thing and at the time they were only aware of people being able to have missionary sex.

Interesting tidbit from Wikipedia:

There is a common belief that the term "missionary position" arose in response to teachings by Christian missionaries that this sex position was the only "proper" way to engage in sexual intercourse. This is in fact a myth. The reality is that the term probably originated some time between 1945 and 1965 through a confluence of (apparently honest) misunderstandings and misinterpretations of historical documents.[3][4]

I did a little research, and apparently, the Troll is right.

Missionaries believed that man-on-top is the only acceptable way to have sex before the Lord. And thus they coined it, the Missionary position.

for what its worth i wouldnt take to much to heart in the straight dope.  They have so many false premises i would not know where to start in rebuttal.  anyone who can toot their horn for the federal reserve automatically disqualifies themselves as a ligitimate source imo

The term most likely has different origins.  But the missionary
fervor is to convert nativees to Christianity.  If they could
convince the natives that sex is only for reproduction and
not for any other reason, then they literally, have them by
the short-hairs.

I'm old enough the remember before 1945 and remember the term "Missionary Position" before then.  So... Wikipedia be damned - again
