So last weekend my number 1 slave boy and I were hanging out at the beach
and enjoying brunch at a family owned coffee shop/cafe'.
The place is nice and cheerful and the staff are laid-back, mellow,
local folks.  It is the kind of place that is only open for breakfast and lunch,
and sometimes the daily specials are really popular and
are sold out if you do not get there early.

Well, this old guy comes in and is being grouchy, because it is
almost closing time and the kitchen ran out of what he wanted.
So he begins to berate and insult both the waitress and the cook,
who can hear what is going on through the opening to the kitchen.
(What kind of idiot insults the person cooking their food?
Do they want the cook to put something nasty in it or what?)

The boy and I are listening to all this because it is a small place
and it is impossible to ignore what is happening.  When the waitress
came by to refill our drinks we both sympathized with her, telling
it is a shame when people act that way towards the service staff.

She brightened up and was happy to have a nice conversation.
And it made both of us feel good that we could bring a smile
to her face.

Please excuse the rambling, just needed to get that off my chest
because when someone makes an fool of themselves in public
like that, I have to hold back from teaching them some civility
and manners with a whip and a board.

Living in Manhattan, random acts of rudeness like that exploded around me all the time

In the first week I said things to service staff like "I am so sorry that happened.  Are you OK?"

The looked at me confused.  Or they snarled "what are you talking about? That didn't bother me at all"

In the end I was shouting at strangers in Post Offices myself - and I knew it was time to come home :)

That is what I love about Oz.  It is always "G'day mate and Good on ya mate" and to people that they do not even know and have never seen before.

Hey, Vendaval. =)

This man was old, you said? Aw. I usually give our senior citizens a bit of leeway. Maybe he was in severe pain, maybe he was lonely because his family treats him like garbage. It's hard to age in America these days. Seniors hardly get any respect and instead of being honored, they get made fun of. Or treated like they're disposable.

Not saying that this was the case with that particular guy, I just have a ton of sympathy for the elderly.

Well since we shot John Glenn into space maybe somebody will finally take my plan seriously to jettison all of the elderly into the sun.

Actually, my pet peeve for rudenss in public places falls on the parents of the little snotty, misbehaved ankle-biters that let them run rampant.  I really can't stand kids anyway, but there are just some people out there who shouldn't be allowed to have them.

Stella, you're right about the seniors......I work in an environment where I see older folks ignored by their kids alot.....it's in a hospital, and they often call Security just to talk to someone who might actually listen to them....and if I have the time, I talk to them.....it's not costing me anything, and if it makes 'em feel better, then that's just great.  I'm alot more patient with them than the parents and kids!

Hi Stella,

I did give him some leeway for being an older guy, probably
grouchy because of arthritis or something.  But he kept on
and on with the nasty comments.  Maybe what he needs is
an assisted living situation,  because the staff at a restaurant
has enough work on their hands already.

Be well,

Vendaval

My biggest peeve is when you hold the door open for the person behind you and they then open the door next to it and you stand there looking like an idiot (ok more of an idiot than usual) - seems to happen a lot in the Mid West - the other side is where you are right behind people and they don't even check behind then to see if someone is following and let the door back in your face. .
