that dye smells so bad it stinks up the whole house, litterally can NOT be good for your hair lol. My mom died her hair tonight, and god the smell is enough to knock you back 10 feet. Specially in the bathroom where the smell originated.

I'm guessing she used a harsher dye that contains a lot of ammonia... is she covering a sizeable amount of grey?

Oh, and while not 'good' for your hair, the ones that deposit colour (darker dyes - usually reds, browns, etc.) are better (won't damage nearly as much) as those that remove colour (pre-lighteners, blond shades, etc.).

I have been tossed out of the house and made to sit on the back patio when I was coloring my hair a few times bcasue the smell got to my mom.  Some of them just reek, and it isnt necessarily the ammonia smell, but the fragrance they put in there to cover it.
No more for me, thank you very much.  I am happy with the resirual blonde streaks from my lemon juice this summer

Heh... I switch between redhead and blonde. I swear I'm a natural both, but anyway...

The stuff we use on my hair to make the switch from redhead to blonde makes my eyes water and my scalp burn. But it gives the most amazing results and is actually one of the safer products on the market. The problem is that you have to know what you are doing because you can actually burn your scalp with the professional stuff.

Henna. Depending on the ingredients used, it can smell like coffee (NOT a bad thing!), flowers (I tried a brown shade that remided me of sage & lavender), spices, etc.

I use Loreal Excellence Creme to lighten my hair after I've darkened it... the smell isn't as bad as some I've used, but it certainly isn't roses either! For adding colour, my current fav is Garnier 100%. The smell doesn't seem bad, but the fumes will make your eye's burn. But the colour is fabulous (#426 - deep purple).

Anyway, if it's minimal grey coverage, and your Mom is sticking close to her natural colour, I'd suggest trying a henna. BUT ONLY AFTER SHE'S LEFT HER HAIR ALONE FOR A FEW MONTHS!!! (2 -3). Otherwise, you can get...hmm... interesting results.

If all else fails... go shopping while she's doing her hair.

Pretty much anything you buy that's 'do it yourself' is gonna stink.  I no longer color my own hair, but have my stylist do it.  The results are the same each time and she uses Chi hair color.  It's ammonia free and smells nice...... and it covers my growing numbers of white hairs.  Let's just say if I didn't visit the stylist on a regular basis, I'd look like Cruella Deville.

I found that one about 10 years ago, but it worked out well; because I am light haired and my gray has turned to dirty blonde...teehee.

When people question why I have to go to the stylist for coloring so often, I tell them LOOK, the only thing about me that is high maintenance is my hair.  I love my hair and will suffer to keep it beautiful......... although I'll happily suffer a day at the spa including a full body massage...... oh what a terrible way to suffer for the sake of beauty.

F.Y.I to those of you who think coloring your hair is a harmless activity:

quote:

data from the National Cancer Institute suggest that 20 percent of all cases among women of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, the disease that killed Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, are due to women’s regular use of commercial hair dye products.

The evidence is also suggestive of an association with breast cancer, as reported in The Breast Cancer Prevention Bible (Macmillan 1997). The dye para-phenylenediamine (PPED), used in virtually every commercial permanent and semipermanent product appears to be the culprit. It was shown in 1986 to be carcinogenic to the breast following oxidation with hydrogen peroxide, precisely as these products are used by women.

Further evidence of the cancer risk from hair dye use comes from studies of hairdressers that have provided clear evidence both men and women are at heavily increased risk for bladder and other cancers. Finally, hair dyes may also pose a risk to children whose mothers used them shortly prior to conception or during pregnancy. In fact, the risk of childhood cancer could be increased by as much as tenfold. It appears safe to assume that the darker the color, and the more frequently it is used, the greater the health risk.

The fact that the hair color industry is legally exposing millions of women to carcinogenic chemicals without label warnings is, in part, due to legislation governing cosmetics dating to the 1938 Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
