The F-86 Saber Jet, one of the first USAF jet fighters, was armed with .50 caliber machine guns. The ammo bins, for each gun, held a belt of ammo 27 ft long...or 9 yards. When returning pilots were asked how much ammo they had used, they'd say "the whole 9 yards". Hence, the expression came to mean 'everything' or 'whatever is available'. 'hawk
