I've been thinking about getting a new camera.  I now have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ10 which I love and is a huge step up from the crappy Kodak digital that I started with.  The Panasonic came with a great Leica lens, but isn't a SLR so the lenses can't be changed.  I'm definitely to the point on needing that option...interchangeable lenses.  I've narrowed my choices down to either a Canon EOS Digtal Rebel XT or the Nikon D50.  Anyone own either one of these?  And if so...pros and cons of them.

You have the top 2 on your list, Canon & Nikon run head to head, Canon seemingly eeking out as the top brand. I'm still into film SLRs (I have a Nikon, Shifted has Canon..OK, we're a little competitive..lol) but did quite a bit of research on the digitals. Luckily most of the lens for these work with both film and digital. Brace yourself for a hefty pricetag though.

Last year I splurged and got a Canon EOS 20D with several different lenses but the EFS 17-85mm with image stabilizer is my favourite. The biggest benefit for Canon, for me, was that the lenses would be interchangable with my film Canon Rebel.

I really love this camera and it is very easy to use. I did alot of shopping around and talking to professional photographers before taking the plunge and have not regreted the purchase at all.

Ok...I made a big mistake and went into a camera shop this morning.  Held a gorgeous Canon EOS 30D in my hands.  I want it!   I also want a Lensbaby and a Gorillapod, but no one carries them locally.  Gonna have to shop online for those items.  Time to start saving.  This shit is expensive.

Try the B& H photo web site

Also check with the local PPA professional photographers association in your area.
My friend takes pictures for a local paper, and she got her equipment ( canon ) from a local distributor that had bought back a bunch of stuff from a newspaper that upgraded. But she only found out about it as shes a PPA member.
She got a big discount.

Y'know. One of the things about the "Digital Revolution" is that we inherited from a father-in-law his old nikon body and lens.

Nice camera.

And we just ship the roll of film off to the Kodak lab, and it comes back double prints AND a CD scanned from the negative.

I dunno about the BEST strategy, but man, did they build them nice, it's a joy to hold and use.
