"US couples seek separate bedrooms"

"More and more couples in the US are ordering separate master bedrooms
in their new homes to help ensure a more harmonious marriage, research suggests."

Yep when I was married we had separate bedrooms because he had severe sleep apena and I was unwilling to loose sleep night after night. Plus I had my own bathroom which was nice and clean, his was a mess[:'(]. I build houses for a living and I can tell you that yes, more and more people are having homes with two master bedrooms with full baths built these days.

It actually makes sense to me. Just because your married or living together does not mean you both have to  sleep in the same bed especially  if the qualityof sleep sucks.Years ago I had to have surgery. When I came home, needing bed rest  for a few more weeks, hub had the bedroom all ready for me.
During that time he slept in another room. Well, he never came back LOL
We both realized we had better nights sleep, woke up in better moods, had better days when we didnt share a bed. We did not disrupt each others sleep anymore like we had for years and I wasnt a royal bitch in the morning  to him because I was sleep deprived. This situation has worked great for us.

I can't imagine sleeping in a different room away from Scooter. I just can't.

Really...I've never slept better or more soundly when next to the lady of my desires. Now if a kid gets in bed with us, that's a different story  ; }

Separate bedromms is not as good as separate houses at least 100 miles apart for a harmonious relationship. Separate countries is even better.

juliaoceania -> RE: "US couples seek separate bedrooms" (3/13/2007 7:44:37 AM)

I have no desire for my own bedroom. I wouldn't mind having my own research office because I feel I need one someday, but I love sharing a bed with my Daddy. Believe it or not his loud snoring is reassuring to me because it lets me know he is deeply asleep. It just is nice to hear (I know I am weird).

toservez -> RE: "US couples seek separate bedrooms" (3/13/2007 7:46:38 AM)

I have known a few couples who do the separate bedroom thing. I understand the reasons but it still makes me sad to know this happens as I cannot imagine sleeping in an empty bed with my other in another room. There are certainly benefits but I would think there are also many negatives and many of them affecting intimacy.

LaTigresse -> RE: "US couples seek separate bedrooms" (3/13/2007 7:48:52 AM)

It makes total sense to me.

popeye1250 -> RE: "US couples seek separate bedrooms" (3/13/2007 8:31:23 AM)

I have a "King-sized" bed so there's usually plenty of room.
The sheets for those things are expensive though.

LaTigresse -> RE: "US couples seek separate bedrooms" (3/13/2007 1:37:14 PM)

Yes they are, especially the good ones. However they are well worth the money. I love my king sized bed and would be miserable without it.

Cool article on couples sleeping apart

Estranged Couples

I know for me, I have a rule that whoever I live with will have their own bedroom. I think we all deserve our own space and beds to go to and not be tripping over everyone. Especially in an open poly situation, can't kick someone out of their bed just because you brought someone new for the night or had a long distance partner come for a vacation.

Not here

Julia, what you say about hearing the snoring is very sweet- I understand totaly wish I could handle it but....
Snoring rakes over me worst than fingernails down a chalkboard. Oh I don't even want to think about it LOL

We're very close to 20 yrs together. We are very well made for each other except for the sleeping in the same bed- we both like getting a good night instead of tossing turning  struggling.

BRNaughtyAngel -> RE: "US couples seek separate bedrooms" (3/13/2007 3:57:52 PM)

My parents will be married 55 years in November.  They still sleep in the same bed and wouldn't have it any other way.  [sm=smile.gif]

Ditto...I won't sleep without Jewel. I don't even understand seperate beds and certainly not seperate rooms. I haven't even figured out the point of 2 sinks in a bathroom.

hisannabelle -> RE: "US couples seek separate bedrooms" (3/13/2007 6:11:22 PM)

i think when we eventually move in together, we'll have at least a futon or something in another room, because i do not sleep well at all under perfectly ideal circumstances. it's hit or miss when i'm sleeping with Him...i really enjoy being next to Him but sometimes i just cannot get to sleep. (other times i sleep like a baby.) last night He woke me up in the middle of the night for some Fun, and i couldn't get back to sleep, and had a doc appt. first thing this morning...He was tossing and turning, so i vacated to the couch (which is comfy, and has recently replaced the futon He had)...was much better than staying in the bed probably would have been.

although i really love sleeping in the same bed, sometimes it's just not ideal. when you bring in the issue of health problems and having problems with sleep already, sometimes we just need separate spaces. :)

justheather -> RE: "US couples seek separate bedrooms" (3/13/2007 6:16:35 PM)

Bigger bed? Yes.
Seperate bedrooms? No thanks.
One thing I do want is a napping nook on the deck... A wide built-in bench that I can cover with a futon mattress and take wonderful outdoor naps in the sunshine...

hisannabelle -> RE: "US couples seek separate bedrooms" (3/13/2007 6:20:04 PM)

for me, if i am having a hard time sleeping due to something He's actually doing, it's usually talking in His sleep, not necessarily fighting for space or anything like that. that's why i think separate beds might work better than a bigger bed (although for those who just have space problems...the bigger, the better).

i -love- the nap nook idea. :)

and scooter - cannot fathom myself why people need two sinks. my dad and stepmom had one of those bathrooms...always seemed a bit bourgeois and over the top to me.

Vendaval -> RE: "US couples seek separate bedrooms" (3/13/2007 11:38:18 PM)

There are different pros and cons, depending in the circumstances.
I prefer the intimacy of sleeping next to my partner.  But I also
remember that the combined snoring of my mother and step-father
could be heard through the whole house at night, along with
him talking in his sleep and having nightmares.  (He had been
in the Army during WWII and would start thrashing about).
