Aubre -> Can a smoker be an environmentalist? (3/13/2007 9:14:51 AM)

I saw where Al Gore was catching heat for being a meat-eater and claiming to be an environmentalist (I don't get the connection) then someone at work was wondering if smokers could be environmentalists. Evidently in addition to the gases produced by smoking the cigarette butts choke a lot of birds and small animals. What do you guys think?

I was an environmentalist smoker, now I am a nonsmoker. One of the reasons I am glad I quit was because of my beliefs about the environment.

Being an environmentalist does not negate the possibility of
being a smoker or having another type of addiction.  Many
people who have tried repeatedly to quit smoking will tell
you that it is the hardest thing they have ever done.

yes, many of us started smoking before we became socially aware. I know I did

No one can escape the fact that we are all hypocrites in some way. For most of us hopefully it is tiny in scope, more in the difficulties of living life and we can admit to it.

Of course you can be an environmentalist and smoke. Almost all people who would call themselves environmentalists would fail some standard someone might have to make them feel better about their own actions. You could pose this question many ways. Are you an environmentalist if you drive a car to work even if you could theoretically walk, ride a bike or use mass transportation. Are you one if you buy books or subscribe to magazines. Are you one if you ever buy something that is not biodegradable and on and on.

It is like all other general questions it depends on the eye of the beholder. For me if you make a conscious effort to be environmentally positive compared to a significant majority of people, you are good in my book.

Can people who fart be environmentalists?

meatcleaver -> RE: Can a smoker be an environmentalist? (3/13/2007 11:48:41 AM)

Of course a smoker can be an environmentalist, puffing on the occasional cigar which is my vice  is not melting the ice caps. I cycle most places or use the public transport, I have a motorbike I occasionally use and my apartment and studio are well insulated, use solar heating for the water and I have a wind generator. Yep, my apartment is also connected to the national grid, you can't generate all your own power in this part of the world in the city, its impossible.

A none smoker who drives a car to work and whose home uses the electricity from the grid almost certainly pollutes more than me. If they drive a SUV they are positively anti-social, polluting and damaging other people's health far more than any secondhand smoke that wafts past someone in the street. Traffic fumes causes asthma in children, not secondhand smoke from smokers in a bar somewhere or walking down the street.

I used to have smoker friends.  I would sit with them out on my porch and talk while they indulged themselves.

One thing I always found astonishing, fascinating, and/or disgusting is that as a general population, (I am sure there are exceptions) smokers seem to feel that the entire world is their own personal ashtray.

"Dude, mind throwing that butt you just ground out on my driveway in my trash can so I dont have to?"

Sinergy

p.s. I dont throw trash on their floor, but apparently it is ok for them to throw their trash on mine.

edited for too many Sinergys and a ps comment.

I had an interesting dialogue with a fella years ago and he was telling me about a fiction book he read. It was about environmentalist fanatics. They started off a lot like this, all turned vegan and then started pitying the poor veggies that died, so they started eating some kind of crap made out of dead grass fibers, then they started talking about the millions of microbes that were dying every time they took breath. So they committed mass suicide to save the poor microbes.

1. I have sharp teeth for a reason and bambi knows what that is.
2. I don't think a cigarette is going to do near as much harm as thousands of acres of fires.
3. I am environmentally conscious because when that cute helpless cow hits the butchers freezer I demand the rest of her hits my feet in leather, she goes into my glue blah blah blah.
4. What pissses me off is that plastic is the wave of the future. I miss glass bottles. I would rather refill it than melt it all down so it can be a friggen bottle all over again.

No Sinergy, car owners think they have the right to foul the air. I have never noticed secondhand smoke when I've been in California but I couldn't help but choke of the shit being pumped out of oversized cars.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Can a smoker be an environmentalist? (3/13/2007 12:37:01 PM)

Of all the things, I don't think cigarette smoking is among the top priorities of environmentalists right now.  It's a much more direct human health issue of close proximity and repeated use- not a global human issue of long term weather and resource destruction.

farglebargle -> RE: Can a smoker be an environmentalist? (3/13/2007 12:42:24 PM)

Smoking Environmentalists NEVER toss a used butt on the ground. In fact, they can often be seen cleaning up the smoking area.

KenDckey -> RE: Can a smoker be an environmentalist? (3/13/2007 4:34:25 PM)

My take is that  you can be an environmentalist and smoke (way to many polutants to list), fart (a greenhouse gas), eat meat or plants (eating meat kills animals and eating plants adds to polution because they convert bad air to clean air).

I am not a strict environmentalist but I fieldstrip my butts and shove them in my pocket.

Oh   and I have recommended, at times, the use of microbes to clean up fuel spills.  Some of them little buggers really like that stuff.

What do you guys think?

I think it's a dumb question....there's already enough propaganda and fact less BS spouted about smoking already. I don't think we need to escalate it to the point that smokers are now destroying the environment, or at the very least, incapable of attempting to help it out. Next thing you know, they will be saying bikers are incapable of charity work.

No?

You have never seen a cigarette butt on the ground anywhere?

Perhaps it is just US people, or people in the Netherlands, or France, or England, or Canada, or Mexico, or...

FangsNfeet -> RE: Can a smoker be an environmentalist? (3/13/2007 7:42:18 PM)

Ofcourse a smoker can be an environmentalist. After all, Puffing the Magic Dragon was what got the majority of them into enviromental concerns to begin with. Damn Hippies.

If you light and smoke your organic tobaco/alternitive product naturaly, how does it hurt the environment? Fire, burning, and smoke are all things that Mother Earth provides naturaly. Lightening, volcanoes, heat, and forrest fires happen. If nature can take a smoke now and then, why shouldn't we be able to?

domiguy -> RE: Can a smoker be an environmentalist? (3/13/2007 7:52:00 PM)

You can carry an ash tray that is attached to your belt. I do.....It's a bad habit ...But right now I still enjoy my "hobby' way too much to quit.

Besides it makes me look more Domly...At least that is what they portray in commercials, and who am I to argue with advertisers? They know everything!

But large scale tobacco growing is very wasteful of arable land and resources

I do not smoke pot, and I know of very few of my environmentalist buddies that do either.
