Well, I also think the survey is ill-defined.

However, my "protocol" is very simple - I treat all people with courtesy, generally even after they have proven they are not entitled to any.

As for titles, or other forms of "respect by label," I call people by their nicks or screen names. In real life I call them by their real names.

It's an amazingly simple system.

I agree with this, except in some situations I dont know their nicks or screen names, plus, some dont want to be referred to by those.

So the approach I use is to ask them what they want me to call them, and then call them that.

It is an even simpler system...

Why does any Group need such?
because this is whats needed in
order to be a part of that group.
Its what defines Us not only inside
the Group but outside of it as well.
This is what sets that Group aside
from any other Group. It defines Us.
Why do the Catholics worship deities
and other cristians do not?
Why do Democrats have a donkey as
their status symbol and other Political
Groups do not?
Why do USPS all wear brown suits and
other delivery Groups do not?
Why do College bands have a song thats
different from other College bands?
Why does the Black Panthers wear Black
Panthers on shirts and the KKK wear white Caps?
All these Proticals define who We are and
what Group We associate Our selfs with and
when those Proticals are tempted to be removed
or watered down it is only a tempt to make that
Group weaker in its grasp of what it holds true
and what defines it to be seperate from any other
group in Society as a whole.

I personally do not feel the need to be defined by anyone but myself and those I might form a relationship with. And I'm surprised a 'nonconformist' would need such.

Somehow I don't see the UPS man wearing a brown uniform as a need or desire for definition, or validation, as much as a way to easily recognize who is at the door. For me there is a big difference between this and validation.

I will not grow weaker because I have no 'uniform' or 'protocol' by which to live. I grow weaker by allowing others outside of me to define and/or validate who I am.

I know who and what I am, whether wearing a brown suit, a green suit, a white suit, or no clothes at all. If others do not see it, perhaps it is because I wish them not to....on the other hand, it could be because they don't have the same ideals and charachter as I. But either way, it doesn't matter to me...because I can relate to them on other levels.

In my opinion, the KKK wears a uniform as validation because they lack the self esteem to know they can be strong individuals, among many colors...though that is a little off topic :)

I would like to add my opinions to this discussion. If we take religion as an example, under the large umbrella of religion there are many different ways that people express their religous feelings and beliefs. They all believe in God, but the way in which they choose to do so can be very different.
I think the same thing applies to this lifestyle. Under the big BDSM umbrella, you have many different beliefs and approaches. Some are similar and some are very different. To try to make everyone follow the same thing or behave in the same manner is futile. It will never be a reality. To me that is no big deal.

samples as to how people show

singling out any group for spacifics

And yes there are Many Christian groups
and each group is defined by how they follow
its churches proticals for if they dident they
would all be of the same group and church
would they not? That is just another sample.
When I am in a BDSM Group and I am defined
as a Dominant with in that Group, I do expect
to be treated as such with in that Group. I would
treat others with in the Group in like. Outside of
The Group I am still known and defined as a part
of the same Group because I am not one whom
hides My Lifestyle but I do not expect society to
Treat Me any different then the rest of society out
side of My Group. When I meet a Group member
outside of Our Meetings I greet them in a manner
that is secular to Our Group in recognition. This
is what makes Our Membership and Protical stand
out in a society that is full of Groups of many structures
and Livings. Its what defines Us BDSMers to each other
and the Outside looking in. JMO
