Animals feel the same pain we do.  Tell mom to smack herself on the nose and see if she likes it.

It's obvious who is the dominant leader in this house......the dog.

Two things.....never hit a dog and yelling is very non-productive.

Most important thing.....walk your dog. At least an hour a day.

I work with rescues, mostly large breed agressive dogs that have been given up because they are "mean". Usually alpha personalities that will take control if no one else does. In essense, doing what a canine naturally does.

Except for a rare few cases, very rare, there are no bad dogs, only terrible owners.

fast reply, if you dog is being unruly, watch dog whisperer, you can learn do much from just one episode, and his 411 is SPOT ON

This is spot on.

On a related note, establishing to the dog who the alpha in the relationship is (which happens over time, not by a single or few instances of yelling or hitting) will make almost any dog a happy and friendly dog.  A dog needs to know who is in charge in the relationship, and if you dont do it, the dog will spend all its time trying to take control.

Absofuckinglutely!
That guy is one of the best dog handlers I have ever known of. His methods are perfect. Relating to the dog in a manner the dog totally understands, latterally and in the moment.

My mom says one of these days she's going to smack my dogs nose because he pushes people when he wants to get indoors and you're in the way she says that's how you train dogs, by smacking them on the bridge of their nose. I do not advicate smacking him for any offense exept biting, and then it's one  whack to the butt a very firm NO BAD NOT OK! and then he's put outside. or leaves my presence.

Anyway I told her not to ever be hitting my dog and she said she'll do it if she wants and I won't see it. Can you hurt them by whacking them on the nose?

Next time she bends over have your dog bite her arse.........see how she likes a taste of her own medicine.

NorthernGent -> RE: Can you hurt a dog if you hit them on their nose? (3/16/2007 1:15:19 PM)

Just read the old boy is 15, too.....let him have his way for his last few years because you've no chance of establishing a new pack order at this late stage. He's too old to be putting up with the aggravation of training, but don't get another dog if you can't train him and he has to put up with the company of a woman who thinks she can smack animals when she sees fit.

ExtremeMP -> RE: Can you hurt a dog if you hit them on their nose? (3/16/2007 7:43:34 PM)

Thats just not true! No matter what his age he can still be taught appropriate behavior. To say he is too old to be "putting up with the aggravation of training" is like saying an 80 year old is too old to learn to play chess or learn to read.... Letting him have his way is the EXACT wrong thing to do! Someone WILL get bitten then.

In the animal world if another dog came into the pack he would have to learn his place in line there also, regardless of his age. While smakcking him is not the answer, consistency is! He can be taught at any age. I have a 15 y.o. lab mix and he learns new things all the time... It may take a bit longer than a younger dog but thats to be expected.

Patience and consistency are the key!

On a related note, pin the dog to the floor with a forearm across their shoulder and holding their bottom leg.  They cannot get up, they cannot really get their head in a position to bite.  In a word, they are helpless.  Hold their nose all you want.

I never heard of this. Sounds great!  I have a wrecked back. When sheba aint gonna move there is NO pulling her at all.
is there a diagram of this tecknique as i cant qiute absorb it ?

Wish I could point you to one, I had a dog expert I was in a relationship with teach it to me.

Using it is why her dog didnt leave me with a bloody stump when I reset his dislocated hip.  She was shocked that I know how to do that, but I paid attention when my martial arts master had a seminar on fixing martial arts injuries.

Try doing a search on the internet?

Exactly, ExtremeMP.

From another perspective, a dog who does not have an alpha they can feel secure following will generally be difficult to deal with because they have a need to be the alpha if nobody else will step up and do it.

The dog may be old, but if you step up to the plate and DOMINATE the dog it will be a happy camper.

Depending on the dog, at 15, their eyes are going, their legs are going and all sorts......if an old dear is in a wheelchair you wouldn't attempt to learn her to walk. I'm in full agreement that a dog needs to know its place in the pack, otherwise it will attempt to subvert it, but at 15? I think it depends on the dog's health and 15 is a good innings for a dog i.e. most dogs are on their last legs if they've made it to 15.

Is a 15 years old dog the equivalent of an 80 years old man/woman? Aren't we talking nearer 90/95 years old here?

Vendaval -> RE: Can you hurt a dog if you hit them on their nose? (3/17/2007 2:37:00 AM)

Hitting a dog for this behavior is harmfull and useless.
Do try researching other dog training behaviors.
And by all means, if this is an older dog, be extra careful
because they tend to be a bit touchy and can be
injured more easily.

LaTigresse -> RE: Can you hurt a dog if you hit them on their nose? (3/17/2007 6:50:36 AM)

There is no need to use serious physical force to teach a dog anything. If the dog has a vet's clean bill of health it is fully capable of learning. Especially structure and manners.

ExtremeMP -> RE: Can you hurt a dog if you hit them on their nose? (3/17/2007 9:47:59 AM)

NorthernGent,
With all due respect...
Please read my previous post a second time. My point was that at any age 3, 15, 80, or 90/95 any dog can be taught appropriate behavior, just as any other animal or person can (barring some learning difficulty, brain injury or disease)... Although I have never seen an 80 or 90/95 year old dog before. [;)] An example would be some birds, such as parrots can live to be 80 or 90 years old, yet they can still be taught to say things, perform tricks and modify their behavior even at that age.

He's incredibly healthy, the vet is always amazed at how good he is, he don't have any of the problems most of his  breed do. No dirty gunky stinky ears, no frequent ear infections. He's very spry most days, he's in better shape than any of us in this household, except maybe my dad lol. He enjoys playing too, true he won't run as hard as he used to and he won't be as focused as he used to, but I don't and I won't ask him to be. He ADORES sitting up and begging for treats, I don't ask most times he just does lol. most days he thinks he's a young little dog.

I've been working on him not bumrushing our door. He's good about it if I ask him.

I've said it before so am am only repeating myself but I do it because this is the first time I have ever agreed totally with NG,
let the dog have his days in peace and maybe the alpha in the family, why not ?

MiladyElaine -> RE: Can you hurt a dog if you hit them on their nose? (3/17/2007 12:18:54 PM)

I've always gently slapped my dog's nose to teach when they aren't listening.  They will usually sneeze.  If a gentle slap doesn't do it, a firmer one may be needed.  They will yelp, BUT you have their attention.  Tell them NO.  Repeat as needed and from there all you'll need is to raise your hand and they will sit or whatever.  Praise them for it.  Hitting across the bridge of their nose WILL hurt them.  Blood clots, etc.   Good to use if being attacked though.  I've never trained with food.  You might not have any some day.

yup friday i watched caesar milan teach a 12 y/o beagle mix how to become less anxious and aggressive, easily, consistency is key, and from what i have seen, an aggressive dog is usually lacking exercise.
