If there was such a fear and hatred of the commie menace then why were we trading with the evil empires all through the cold war.

Lets see.

When France leaves Vietnam in 1950, the United States moves troops into Indochina out of fear that China and the Soviet Union would somehow combine into a communist overthrow of the "free world."  The war escalates.  Eventually, we are involved in a war that no president is "man" enough to pull our troops out, until Nixon did so.

A number of years after Dien Bien Phu and the French departure (18 years to be precise) the SR-71 is built in 1968.

Without getting in to the issue about the United States doing things like trading arms for hostages with nations we are having issues with, I would point out that having an enemy in the media does not necessarily prevent the United States from engaging in trade with this enemy.

I can sum it up in one word. Phosphorous.

Phosphorous.

First discovered when urine was collected, allowed to dry out, and the resulting substrate burst into flame.

We invaded Vietnam because they were micturating on our carpet?  (Big Lebowski reference)

That would have made Giap's victory at Dien Bien Phu in 1954 much easier.

Some would say to fill a power vaccum and exploit the resources of a client state.

Actually Lockheed begane acquiring material and signing contracts for the SR 71 in 1962
I chose the example of the SR 71 not because it was the only time we used titanium from Russia but because it was symbolic of the cold war...the fact is that Russia is the primary source for all of the titanium that the U.S. uses in our microtechinical society.  The SR 71 is relative minor in its percentage of our use of titanium.

The U.S. would not have an enemy in the media if the government did not instigate it.
