It has been awhile since I was actively searching for a partner, so I am probably a little out of touch with this idea.  In fact, when I met my Lord I was not even actively searching then so I gave no thought to marketing myself.  My idea of marketing is that it highlights the good aspects while concealing the bad.

What is your view of marketing?  Do you approach finding potential partners with this mindset?

From my perspective, I would rather just be myself, flaws and all.  I have never been interested in trying to sell myself to attract a potential partner.  They would either like me for exactly who I am and not just for the good things.

Good thread kyra...

Here is a definition for marketing i use with my business :

"Many people believe that marketing is just about advertising or sales. However, marketing is everything a company does to acquire customers and maintain a relationship with them. Even the small tasks like writing thank-you letters, playing golf with a prospective client, returning calls promptly and meeting with a past client for coffee can be thought of as marketing. The ultimate goal of marketing is to match a company's products and services to the people who need and want them, thereby ensure profitability"

When i market in business - it is not about concealing the bad, but overcoming it, improving it and presenting a worthy product...i definitely think i apply this to my personal relationships as well.

I agree completely, Kyra.  I expressed my views, and my own little marketing jingle, on the other thread.  Which I think I'm going to avoid, lest I make equally catty remarks about certain.. er.. nevermind.  I am going to be nice.  I hope.

This is different than my perspective.  I do think of selling when I consider marketing and most of my interactions with salesmen are from my own company and they will lie about our capabilities and speak with authority on things they do not have the first clue about.  I think this experience colors my perception of marketing a great deal.

Thank you for a different perspective.

I'm not quite sure I'm following exactly what you mean by "marketing" and "marketing mindset". Can you explain further?

I absolutely love this outlook, dawntreader.

My last Dom always told me I marketed myself well..never quite knew what he meant...(hopefully a compliment..grin)...

BUT to me it means, I am open, honest and my own consumer report on this product of myself.

My mission statement has always been to be the sexiest, classiest, sluttiest submissive for my One.

Specifically presenting yourself in such a way to attract a partner; sell yourself as desirable to be in a relationship with.  Having the mindset that you need to market yourself in order to attract a potential partner.

Does that help?

Your welcome :-)
i had the same perspective as you until i became self-employed. i looked hard for an honorable business model and  marketing plan that i would stand behind - my business thrives on word of mouth and repeat business so i had to build it on honesty and quality, much like i strive to present myself in personal relationships~

thanks for sharing your thoughts.  It's been along time.. but your post reminded me of a Marketing Course I took many moons ago  I wish I could remember more of it... but you seem describe one a Marketing mindset that was a rather new mindset 20+ years ago when I took the course.

No. I never "marketed" myself. I never do, and frankly I've never needed to. Whenever I hear someone talking about marketing, I'm more concerned about what they have to hide.

I am who I am, and that is a beautiful wonderful person. If someone can't see that, then it really doesn't matter because they weren't right. I don't judge other people soley by their looks or by what they eat or believe in. Often I find that as I get to know someone better and realize what a sexy brain they have and interesting they are to talk to, I get more and more attracted to them.

I really think that people who judge soley by looks are the ones who really lose out.

The analogy to "marketing" isn't so applicable to big company marketing, where there is TV advertising, focus groups, partnerships with other large companies, etc. Unless you've got $400 million or so to market yourself with, this is really more along the lines of small business marketing.

The first thing a small business person, or entrepreneur, needs to know before marketing, is why they're in business in the first place. What drives them, what are they passionate about?

For "dating," know why you're in the dating market in the first place. Relationships are work, yes? Why are you taking that on, what do you want from one? What are you passionate about? What are your values and beliefs?

Then, it's about finding someone who shares those passions, values and beliefs. That's a sales function.

Once you know yourself well enough, the question you ask is easy enough to answer. Do you like lookin' hot? Or is personal comfort paramount? Are you into manners and being refined? Or are belching and farting forms of punctuation for conversation?

We all have flaws, but they're usually flaws because we're focused making the things that are more important to us work better. I wouldn't suggest putting a lot of effort into "hiding" them. Instead, put the effort into finding someone to whom they're just not that big a deal.

i started thinking about this after i read a few comments on how the op in the recent married thread isn't marketing himself well.

personally, i don't feel any need to "market" myself. i'm just who i am. maybe if i were seeking someone - especially if i were, say, a male submissive looking for, say, a short term or just play relationship with a domme - i would want to market myself, because i really -want- something. but even though i'm seeking play partners, it's not something that i feel is a lack in my life...i could very happily live without it, and i wouldn't want a primary partner OR any other kind of partner who wasn't happy with me as i am. i'm a pretty straightforward kind of person when it comes to myself.

I'm afraid if I tried to market myself I'd end up having to live up to the adjectives I used about myself. I think I'd rather just describe who I am and let people decide whether or not they want to find out more. I get at least one or two emails from someone each week so I can't be doing too badly. Getting to know some nice people too!

This is interesting hisannabelle...do you not believe that you or anyone markets themselves daily in first impressions?  Whether seeking a relationship or even greeting strangers on the street...

Perhaps, I'm looking at things from a business owner perspective and I enjoy seeing other views...

Marketing has always seemed to me to have an air of deliberately trying to sway opinion.  Which is wonderful from a business perspective, and if that can be done in an honest and forthright manner is admirable.   Do I market myself?  No, not really.  I present myself as I am, and people can respond as they wish.   However, for a reasonable fee I'll write you a shiny jingle.

I know you asked annabelle, but I do not see being who I am as marketing.  In my daily interaction with most people I am just being myself.  I see marketing as more purposeful, with a desired goal in mind.

There have been times in a business or school setting that I have marketed myself and presented the aspects of myself that I thought would make me a good fit for the goal I was seeking to achieve.

I think for me it comes down to motivation.  Am I behaving this way because it is naturally who I am or am I behaving this way in order to achieve a desired goal.
