Durham:

1) Old Anglo-Saxon words are still used in everyday language. Example, gan - meaning to go, beck - meaning stream.
2) The county is unique in England as for centuries it was an independent state. One not ruled by the King, but by a group of local Prince Bishops with its own powers to establish tax, law etc. Today, Durham is known as The Land of The Prince Bishops.
3) During the 7th and 8th centuries - Durham was a centre for early European Christian scholars and art. The Venerable Bede was born in County Durham and buried at Durham Cathedral.
4) Coal and Iron production in Durham were key factors underpinning the British Empire and is probably the oldest coal mining area in England - the Romans excavated coal in this area.
6) Durham Big Meeting is the only coal miners' union festival still existing today and one of the largest annual political gatherings in Europe. In its heyday, the people of all the mining villages in the county marched to Durham City with a banner carrying each village into the city. Basically, it was a day of ale drinking, workers' solidarity and included guest speakers from The Labour Party. All the banners bore mottos to empower the miners in their struggle with their employers and contained captions of notable Socialist figures. http://www.answers.com/topic/durham-miners-gala
7) Durham Castle and Cathedral are World Heritage sites, building began 11th C. Durham Cathedral is the oldest cathedral in Britain http://www.durhamcathedral.co.uk/
8) Durham was known as 'The cradle of the railways' as developments in the county pioneered and transformed transport throughout the world. The first public passenger steam railways opened in the county in 1825.
9) For decades upto the 1950s, a town within the county was the largest shipbuilding town in the world.
10) The coal mining areas of Durham played the pivotal role in the English Civil War by supporting Parliament rather than the King - thus providing the coal needed to power Cromwell's London.

LOL,

Richville Minnesota USA Maybe a village of 200 (plus or minus but probably minus)
Once famous for Cal Meilke's store (that place was a zoo).
Created because the railroad was going thru, and it did and passed them by.  The bar burnt down in the 80's. There are beekeepers about.

(and that is stretching for points of history)

lol, fuck it Ron, at least you can get a bit of peace and quiet when you need it. What happened to the bar........spontaneously combust out of boredom? malicious arson? insurance job (the owners of our Workmen's Club do one every few years or so)?

They had a little burger kitchen in it and the grease traps hadn't been cleaned since  Aethelrod was king in England..........and the rest, shall we say, is history.

Grand Rapids Michigan USA. Birthplace of Gerarld R. Ford former president of the US. First town in the country to put flouride in the city water. And its the only place where you can show where you live by pointing to a spot on your left hand. Look at a map.

StellaByStarlite -> RE: What history do you know of the town or the city where you live? (3/17/2007 8:17:35 AM)

Youngstown, Ohio. =)

Little Chicago. Murdertown, USA. Once of the largest steel-producing areas in the world. It has a sad history, but one I'm pretty proud of anyway.

"Black Monday" was the title given to the fateful day in the late 70s when the majority of the mills closed down. The older folk still mutter about it to this day. Corrupt unions and competition ( who were able to produce more steel for cheaper ) led to our downfall, and we've never completely recovered. Now there's slums, and empty decaying old businesses still standing.

Youngstown also had quite a reputation for being heavily mob-influenced. In fact, people who have lived here all their lives don't even wonder about possible Mafia connections... we just assume it. The Mafia doesn't have nearly as much power as it did in the past, but it's still around, and we all know it.

We have one of the largest municipal parks in the United States ( Mill Creek), and a museum that's rated as a top displayer of American art ( The Butler Museum of American Art) We have an incredible working class history, including the Strike of 1916, which resulted in some deaths. Waves of immigrants in the early 20th century have given this area unique "Old World" flavor.

LOL, It really is a depressing place to live, in a lot of ways.. but hey, it's my home, and I love it. =) It's in my blood.

Chicago, Illinois....Home of Domiguy.

The area from 1803-1812 was known as Fort Dearborn. In 1812 the 148 inhabitants of the Fort's were ambushed by 500 Potawatomi Indians...and 86 of the Fort's inhabitants were killed  in the ambush..."The Fort Dearborn Massacre."...All worked out well...Fort Dearborn became Chicago and the Potawatomi now have a Casino in Milwaukee.

In 1837 Chicago became incorporated as a city.

In April of 1855 The Chicago Police Department was created and in June of 1855 some black dude was stopped on horseback in the first documented case of "racial profiling."

In 1900 the flow of the Chicago River was reversed to keep the bodies of all of the Irish from being carried out into the lake.

In 1914 Wrigley Field was constructed...The mayor proclaimed at the ribbon cutting ceremony "This is the year the Cubs will win the World Series."....The 100 year anniversary of our last World Series  win will be in 2008...1908-2008.....Go Cubs!

Oh yeah....Somewhere back in the 1800's the city burned down...Don't think anyone was killed in the fire...Doesn't matter they are all dead now.

In 1973 the Sears Tower was completed...The World's Tallest building.

Domiguy moves to Chicago in 1995.

1995 Domiguy fucks woman in the Sears Tower (actually it was in her vagina... but I was physically in the Sears Tower...Whenst the fucking occurred...It was still the World's tallest and possibly,at least in that small area, the foulest smelling building) Any whoo the girl was kind of cute and I have to admit I was pleased wth my conquest up until the point when she later divulged that she had  numerous odd encounters with UFO's...(true story)...And I never saw her again...So sad!

In 1998 Asian Longhorned Beetles were discovered in Chicago and a number of trees wee destroyed which in all actuality had no real impact on Domiguy.

In 2006 Domiguy discovers CM....Mayor Daly orders ticker -tape parade.

Although Pensacola is the oldest European settlement in mainland America (settled by the Spanish in 1559), its location has caused great turmoil, with many buildings destroyed by wars, and by numerous major hurricanes. The location, south of the original British colonies, and as the dividing line between French Louisiana and Spanish Florida, along the Perdido River, has caused Pensacola to change ownership several times. Pensacola was Spanish, then French, then Spanish, then British, then Spanish again, before becoming American, then Confederate, and then the current U.S. city.

Naval Air Station Pensacola, known as "The Cradle of Naval Aviation", is a United States Navy base located in Pensacola. It is the primary training base for Navy and Marine aviators and as the home base for the Blue Angels precision-flying team.

Pensacola is located in the Sunshine state of Florida, where you can enjoy the four seasons... Almost Summer....Summer.....Still Summer.....and Christmas. Pensacola is best known for the sugar white sand of our beaches, and the orange plastic of our road construction cones.

Periodically, Pensacola blossoms with the bright blue of roof tarps which can best be seen by aerial view of the area when news crews do helicopter coverage of the hurricane damage. After Hurricane Ivan in 2004, the roof tops made a solid collage of blue which gave Pensacola the quaint appearance of being transformed into a cross between an inland sea and a tent city.

Vacationers can enjoy our climate and beaches, where you can experience the heat and humidity of an outdoor steambath while absorbing a lifetime's worth of UV radiation.

When I lived in NY, I knew most of its history.  I grew up on Coney Island, which is a historic masterpiece.  Out here in Nashville, I dont know much of it yet, aside from the music industry stuff.  I am learning it though since my new state has a great history.

Not much has happened here in Northeast Maryland. I just joined the Cecil County Historical Society to do research for my metal detecting. I did get a spanish coin from the 1700s that was up the street from the Principio Iron Works where they made cannons for the Revolutionary War. We had no Civil War action here, but we did have Revolutionary War action at The Head Of Elk.

Well, Fairmont is your typical American frontier colony turned city.  It is supposedly the first place father's day was celebrated as an offical holiday.  That's about all I know.

The little bitty town I currently live in and grew up in as well has a fort right on the banks of the Missouri River. I used to walk to it and go through it all the time spending hours there. It's a great piece of history you can see and touch and explore.
