Greetings:
My name is David Mirich, a licensed psychologist in the Denver area.
I am seeking those adults who subscribe to, and participate in some way in an organized BDSM community *in addition to* practicing physical and/or pscyhological play (the play being private and/or public) to be in a study. It is my intention to publish the results of this study as part of a book exploring the BDSM community. The goal of this book is to create a clearer awareness and understanding of the BDSM community and the individuals in it. Participants are guaranteed anonymity and privacy.
Participation will include all or some of the following:
1. An informal interview via an on-line questionnaire;
2. Personality testing (MMPI-2) (results will be provided to you free of charge);
3. Completion of behavioral scales (10 different instruments 9 of which are on-line);
4. Professional IQ testing (results of which will be provided to you free of charge).
For the initial part of this study, we will look at the first 240 full participants. However, the on-line scales and interview will be available indefinately and I hope to be able to continue adminstering MMPI and IQ tests to further expand the dataset.
There will be four levels of participation:
1. Everyone will begin the study by completing the on-line scales and on-line interview. People may choose to stop at this point or they may go on to Step 2.
2. Those who choose to continue will take the MMPI-2, either in my offices, during one of my on-site visits, or completed in the office of a professional of your choosing or in the office of a Kink Aware Professional that we will assist in locating for you. People may choose to stop at this point or they may go on to Step 3.
3. Those who choose to continue will also take an IQ test, professionally administered by myself or a member of my research team, either in my offices or during one of my on-site visits. This will be the full extent of participation available and this se5t of participants will be considered the "core" dataset.
In the interests of transparency and full disclosure, there is one more level of participation which is now closed:
4. A small number of people have already taken the MCMI and MSI inventories in addition to the instruments mentioned in steps 1 - 3. Participation at this level of the study is already complete and we have discontinued administration of these instruments.
NOTE ABOUT TESTING: It will not be necessary for any individual to be connected to the web in order to complete the scales and interview or to participate in the study. Participants will be able to complete these items at my office or, if outside the Denver area, on one of my visits to their area.
