Please educate yourself on the history of colonialism... perhaps taking a course in African history, and modern free markets will inform you. You seem like a smart young lady, I am not being petty nor insulting. It is just that this question goes way beyond the scope of a forum and entire books have been written on the topic... my first recommendation to catch you up to colonial times would be Gun, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond. This book looks at the basic animal and plant resources that every continent was naturally embued with to develop. Another aspect I would focus on is mineral wealth, nuts, and precious stones... these resources have been bought up and controlled by foriegn interests... another aspect I would look at is the AIDs epidemic.

Of course your question might be completely rhetorical, and you may not be interested in the literal answer to it...

while i do know what traumas minerals and precious stones have caused in africa, and that they are pretty much single handedly to blame for the fact that most nations cannot get out of the hands of radicals/rebels/what every you want to call the parties in power, but i dont see how colonialism has any effect on the fact that people who originally leave africa for a better education to help their people end up not returning.

Which people? You mean descendents of former slaves? Those are AMERICANS

Edited to add, you should really read more on the topic because it is obvious to me you do not understand it. Like I said, Guns. Germs, and Steel... Yalis Question

quote:

The focus of Jared Diamond's book to is to answer what he terms Yali's question; "Why is it that you white people developed so much cargo and brought it to New Guinea but we black people had little cargo of our own?" As a teacher of global studies, I have often wondered the same thing. Once we move beyond ancient history, the history of the world (or, at least the from the point of view of the global studies curriculum) revolves around the age of imperialism by white people, their subjugation of non‑whites and the modem attempts of non‑whites to establish stability and obtain their share of what Yali terms "cargo”.

uuuuh no, not african americans. i am talking african citizens who leave their country to puruse a greater education then never return home and thus are responsible for [at least contribute to the fact] that their country stays in poverty by denying it the now university educated residents who opt to stay in the US.

i was under the impression this thread was about uganda cutting rainforest ---> poverty nations ----> education reduces poverty -----> the people who get the education dont bother to return.

how when and why did you bring colonialism into the mix, is beyond me. i find it irrelevant to my comment on the matter that its africa's own citizens who are responsible for the lack of education found in the country by not bothering to return with it, when they leave for it.

Mix, correct, if those programs are designed to educate Africans here so that they can take that education back to their home countries why are they remaining in the U.S. after they graduate?
U.S. Citizenship should not be an option in those programs!
If that's the case I hope U.S. Taxdollars aren't being used in those programs!
I think it was back in 2006 in Scotland that they had a science symposium and expected about 3,000 to 5,000 people to attend.
They noticed that there were about a thousand rsvp's from Africa.
Turns out that a Nigerian smuggling ring planned to use it to smuggle those 1,000 "scientists" into Great Britain!

On the other hand, places like China and India should be working on population reduction.

Yes.... that's precisely what I am getting at. I say we institute a ''zero'' immigration policy with any country /people, whose population growth /explosion vastly outweighs their means of subsistence.

Take for instance Bangladesh..... It has roughly the same landmass of Oregon yet it has nearly 140 million people. That's outrageous Julia....and I know you have a very soft heart for this stuff, but if were up to me, I'd force the people to wallow in the misery that employs such ignorance before I let them come over here.

What does this have to do with people educated in America and returning to Africa... it is really not apparent to me where that issue got tossed in the mix

Education, early medical and nutritional aid, and economic hope are what is needed for population control

My original point remains the same, education has helped Bangladesh solve some of their problems and the outlook is better than previously was.

i dont understand how you are so confused julia. i was trying to make a point, that YOU brought up.

education leads to a less poverty. less poverty leads to a better country. a better country is going to make a more informed decision regarding their rainforest. but a country cannot become educated when the people who leave to seek that education [generally here in the US] do not return.

Mix, I agree they need to start educating themselves in Africa or they won't survive.
