MzMia -> Any other Vegetarians around here? (3/21/2007 8:23:19 PM)

The current animal thread, caused me to ask this question.
I stopped eating meat about 12 years ago, and I have not really looked back.
There are so many great meatless foods around, especially morniingstar...
I gave my nephew some veggie bacon, and he said "No way is this not meat".
I don't miss eating meat at all, but I know not to go to other people's home for dinner hungry!
LOL   It's funny, once I put the veggies, starches, and all on my plate most don't notice I don't

have meat on it at Thanksgiving.
Anyway, any other CM Vegetarians around, you meat eaters can post also.[:'(]

Send me the cow..

Many other cultures eat very little meat, especially many of the countries in Asia.
They tend to be lean and relatively healthy living primarily off of rice.
There was a special on 60 minutes about this island in Asia, that has the largest population
of the oldest living people in the world.  They were Asian, and many lived to be near 100.
Most were still working, those people eat tiny, tiny bits of meat.

I recently got into an attempt to cook vegetarian.  My chili lacked the specific flavor it got from dead pigs and cows, but the people I fed it to didnt notice.  Perhaps I am just being judgemental about my cooking.  It is fun.  It is interesting to cook without dead animals.  It requires quite a bit of effort to get things to taste right.
On the other hand, after doing it for a few weeks, dead animals in the food adds a flavor that I dont necessarily care for.

I did not start doing it because of some weird ideal that Bambi must survive.  I did it because I was curious how to live after humanity exterminates all animals, and how I could survive while boycotting Soylent Green.

It was not rocket science.

Daddy, I noticed, I was just being supportive of your attempt to try to lower your bad cholestrol...

LOL Sinergy you are too cute.  Look, next time you make chili use the meat substitute from
morningstar.  They sell it and it looks just like ground beef, with the right flavorings people
probably won't even know its not meat.
I use that ground beef {veggie ground beef} in a lot of receipes and I am telling you, people
can not tell!  I try to stick with morningstar, some of the other meat substitutes taste like crap.

i was raised by rastafarian very health conscioues parents so have only eaten meat on rare occaisionsand it seemed like nasty stuff. ugh! there are so many sources of non animal protein on the planet. Trouble is most learn to cook meat and just don't know how to spice and prepare vegie foods. take tofu or tvp most people do not cook it with enuff oil of at high enuff temperatures so the texture is not chewy and nice like it should be... have lots of garlic powder, oregano, basil, curry on hand for extra flavor. and always use nutritional yeast with tofu, just a little the yeast adds important b vitamins...

hisannabelle -> RE: Any other Vegetarians around here? (3/21/2007 9:14:23 PM)

to be honest, i don't really plan on ever becoming vegetarian, but i absolutely love the creative things vegetarians and vegans do with food. some of the best cooking i've ever had was made by vegetarians. i think it makes people more creative. that, and the healthiest, yummiest frozen dinners (for us lazy/busy college students who only cook every so often) are organic and/or vegetarian/vegan - amy's, anybody? :)

i can't speak for other parts of asia, but i do know that in tibet, meat is a staple of the diet and has pretty much always been, due to the climate there.

MzMia -> RE: Any other Vegetarians around here? (3/21/2007 9:21:00 PM)

Thats interesting hisannabelle, I have always heard most Asians only eat very small amounts of meat.
I don't think the Chinese and Koreans eat much meat.
Here is a cute link that I think applies to most Asian diets.

I'm not a vegetarian because I love animals, I'm a vegetarian because I hate plants.

Asian Diet

thanks for the link! i am sure this is probably common of other asian diets, but in tibet, because of the climate and the inability to provide adequate nutrition from other sources year-round, the staple is pretty much meat and tsampa (dough usually made from barley flour). i am guessing this might be common in areas of mongolia and nepal as well, but i could not say for sure.

from what i know, the tibetans are a bit weird in this respect. for some reason, the culture that comes to my mind when i think of not eating much meat is the japanese - i think maybe the island you were talking about earlier was in japan (i remember hearing something about the phenomenon awhile back). at any rate, i agree that meat isn't really prevalent in most other asian cultures (besides tibet).

thanks again for the link! it's really interesting :)

azzmaster -> RE: Any other Vegetarians around here? (3/21/2007 10:55:21 PM)

much of nepal is able to grow vegetables, unlike tibet... there are 3 basic geographic zones... alot of it is not in the himalayas. its extremely buddhist there and pretty hard to get meat. One of the easiest countries for a vegetarian to visit. They manage to eat the vegies from the lower lying plains in the higher elevations. tibet is much higher and thus hard to grow anything besides barley. so the barley flour mixed with tea and yak butter is pretty commonly eaten. most people also eat yak but they don't get it everyday

it's "extremely buddhist" in tibet, too, but much easier to get meat. i don't think the religion has a whole lot to do with it. but yeah, this is a pretty good breakdown of the area. :) i wasn't sure whether veggies were as readily available in nepal - thanks for clearing that up :)

azzmaster -> RE: Any other Vegetarians around here? (3/21/2007 11:07:13 PM)

a buddhist won't eat meat unless absolutely necessary as in tibet. if vegies were available they would not... but u really can't survive on just barley flour and butter... some buddhist who travel there try because of not wanting to eat meat and get sick from lack of protein. I know i did...

i beg to differ. the majority of tibetan lamas i have met happily partake of meat in america, where vegetarian options are widely offered. i'm a non-vegetarian buddhist practicing with a tibetan buddhist group, most of which is comprised of non-vegetarians. the idea that all buddhists have to be vegetarian is something i see in a lot of groups of western mahayana practitioners (particularly zen, for some reason), but it is not a very big issue in theravada (because the idea is to eat what's available or offered to you) or vajrayana (because it grew out of a meat-eating culture).
