FelinePersuasion -> Are there ever any fat belly dancers? (3/22/2007 12:49:41 AM)

I looked for belly dancing sites today, and all of them their these lithe thin lean sexy women in skimpy costumes. Now I suppose that's because they've been at it a while, but it don't lead me to believe fat people, ever dance.

lol. it depends on your opinon on at what weight a woman is "fat". i have personally seen woman i felt could be called "fat" that were belly dancers.

dead blue bird, well I mean clearly medically over weight, not by like 5 pounds either, women like my size, the 200 300 pound type of fat.

Belly dancing can be done by women ( and men ) of all sizes, i, myself, am a learner belly dancer and i couldn't be classified as chubby, even on a good day, i'm definitely obese.
In middle easter cultures, where belly dancing originated they tend to prefer larger more voluptuous women, so yes fat women can and do belly dance. However it seems to me that the sites your going to are western sites where, skinny is best.
Don't be deterred by these give it a go, i gurantee you will love it, though be warned its particularly hard on the knees if you have knee problems. look for an understand teacher, and she should be able to modify some of the moves for you.
And imo,  women who have a bit of chub on them look best in the outfits, not obese like me, but with a bit of tummy and ample breasts.

thank you willow and lil:)

James is going to give me some belly dancing tapes, see if I can manage what they ask before I try classes, the classes here all all like 55 an hour or 65 for 6 sessions, I had the chance to do it for 25 bucks, but I passed because it was a group thing, and I don't like performing in groups, I wish I had not passed it up now though.

Nikolette -> RE: Are there ever any fat belly dancers? (3/22/2007 1:40:56 AM)

Of course there are.

Ideally traditional belly dancers had a "belly" and I am not referring to the abdomen on someone, but rather an actual plump belly.

But anyone of any reasonable size can do it. Can you wriggle around? Can you walk and stand? Do you have a good sense of rhythm? You can belly dance.

I'm sure they just put lost of lean women on their site, not because they actually got that skinny from belly dancing, but rather because they want people to think "oh if I belly dance I can look like that too". Sure you'll burn calories but no amount of belly dancing is necessarily going to make someone significantly overweight skinny.

But don't let their marketing scare you away. I'm sure you can do it. :)

Nikolet, I have a bad back from 2 horse riding accidents, and a  twisted or torn plantar nerve. Standing and bearing weight is painful at worst pysichaly stressful and tireing at best, I am sure with some increased pychical activity the weak muscles in the back will begin to get stronger, however we never know what will stress the back muscles, since it's often simple things like prolonged sitting, bending, lifting, often sometimes mere walking.  The tapes will be a good start we think:) good to know though that there are actually overweight dancers, hehe you'd never know it by the advertisements/

Caitriona -> RE: Are there ever any fat belly dancers? (3/22/2007 2:31:30 AM)

My goodness, yes!  Most traditional middle eastern dancers have a bit of a belly on them.  My former teacher was, for lack of a better phrase, round in the middle but she was the most beautiful dancer I've ever seen.

feline, i would suggest going to the doctor first and asking about physical activities, also doing it to a video is probably not a good idea for a beginner. Because some of the moves can be quite hard to master, and you often need the help of an experienced teacher to show  you how 'up close and personal' if you know what i mean.
Good luck with everything.

Yes, I took a class and there were plenty of women of all sizes. The class is fun and good exercise, so go and enjoy yourself. [:D]

i have been in the middle east where belly dancing comes from, there are no skinny belly dancers. never really fat, but voluptuous...if u bellydance enuff it should give u good abs and firm u up, not make u skinny

Not to be nasty but watching skinny women belly dance is not very esthetic. They can't pull off some of the moves in the way they were meant to be. You've got to have ample hips to make it look right.

When you visit a school of Belly Dancers or a Medeval group such as the SCA, you'll find plenty of curvacious belly dancers.

Severity -> RE: Are there ever any fat belly dancers? (3/22/2007 6:07:22 AM)

I have just started belly dancing myself, believe me when I say I have a belly to dance with.
Most people when I tell them love the idea also and 99% of the males I tell walk away with ever expanding pants.
As I read in a post earlier, many prefer a larger lady belly dancing then a thinner, as everything in life, it is in the eye of the beholder.

ownedgirlie -> RE: Are there ever any fat belly dancers? (3/22/2007 8:16:55 AM)

I have taken two different belly dancing classes.  Both were filled with women of all shapes and sizes.  What I loved about the class was the sultriness of the music and the moves.  It felt seductive, feminine, and beautiful.  Everyone in both classes enjoyed themselves and were supportive of each other, no matter what their bodies looked like.  The idea is to enjoy yourself, get a good work out, and feel good.

My first instructor was young, perky, gorgeous and phenomenal.  My second instructor was older with a large belly, funny and very good.  It made no difference and I would take either again if I had more time.

Comcast On Demand has a belly dancing class on their excercise channel if you wanted to go that route.

If you have a bad back, I'd consult with your doctor.

The tapes are good for getting comfortable...HOWEVER, you don't want to risk injuring yourself more.  Might I suggest some water aerobics or some type of water exericise to strengthen those muscles before attempting something like belly dancing without a live instructor.

BBT Water is good for you, The community might offer such classes now that pool season will be in full swing in a few months.

btw I do realize an instructor is better than tapes, I told james that yesterday, but I do want to review the tapes before goiing out and finding instructors or classes just yet:)
