It looks very nice, but I would like to encourage you to stay as far away from HP as you possibly can. I can not stress this enough. Much of what they offer is junk IMO. This is coming from a computer tech and VAR. I have had to service these stupid things on more than one occasion and it has always been extremely unpleasant. I felt like charging them double just for the aggravation.

I just took a look at the servicing manual for it and at least this one was some room to get into it and extra slots to add a proper video card, sound card and perhaps something else. The problem is that the video card slot is PCI Express, and currently the only products available for PCI-E are fairly pricey. On the other hand to be fair, though, PCI-E is becoming the standard which will in one way future proof your purchase, although the socket used for the CPU is becoming quickly outdated. They have onboard audio and video, the video being extremely limiting. The audio will not be a problem, though, unless you are seeking high performance in intense games in which case you will take a hit. It looks like you can add more drives with ease which is a bonus. The power supply in it is anemic also, to put it mildly.

So, there are some pluses, and some features on it I like, such as the Intel processor which is the same one I have (both My computers use Intel Pentium 4 processors), the software bundle and a seemingly better interior design as compared to much of their other models, but I just do not like HP/Compaq (HP bought Compaq) computers. I personally do not recommend that you buy a prepackaged computer period, but rather go to your local reseller and have a proper one built for you to your specifications for roughly the same money. If you need one designed for you, just tell Me what you need and I'll configure one for you. you can take the list to a VAR and see what they will charge you. I would price it out for you if I was local, but I do not sell through message boards, or even over the internet period.

By the way, the monitor does not come with it at that price.

I guess it sounds like I rained on your parade a little bit, now that I reread My post and saw the typo. I am sorry about that. As computers have become much of My life I take great pride in what I do and I like warning people of the pitfalls. I hope you do not mind.

If you're not going to be using it for multimedia editing or heavy gaming HP's products are pretty decent in my opinion. HP's support is good (although not as good as Dell's) and their warranty is as well.

I agree in many ways with SirKenin but for most users tracking warranty or drivers for custom built PCs is a pain in the ass (and not in a good way). If you do go that route then find spend the time finding a local PC shop that has A) been around awhile and B) has a strong focus on customer service. Then ask a computer literate friend before making a purchase decision just to make sure the prices and components are decent.

Good luck.

The digital media will be fine, but the games? Nah. you will not like the video card in that computer when it comes to playing games. you will get tired of it in a heck of a hurry.

Also, Tormentius brought up warranty. Warranty is a very valid consideration. The problem with HP (and Dell for that matter) is that you have to ship the computer away to la la land at your own expense. When it goes, it is typically gone for several weeks. This is a major pitfall of buying a prepackaged system. This is one of the other reasons why I recommend your friendly neighborhood VAR. Typically they are right around the corner, it costs you next to nothing to get it there and you would typically have it back in 48 hours or less (I work 24 hours or same day service where at all possible).

Many people forget this aspect of computer purchasing when they stop in at their local Pressure Shop, Best Pressure or Costsmore.

Personally, mine is custom built, no proprietary parts. I have plenty of RAM, and if I don't I have 4 empty slots, big enough processor and can add slots as I find the need.

Naturally I have built both My computers. They are built to My exact specifications with top of the line parts and I do not have a moment's problem with either one of them. They do what I need, when I need. It is great.

They have the worst customer service on the planet. They are worse than HP. My girlfriend has a Dell computer. Go to your local VAR. Trust Me on this one. I don't just say this because I am one. I'd like to see you happy with your purchase and have it give you good service.

Their tech support is fine for the basics, but none of them are trained A+ technicians. They are actually a bunch of kids or foreigners that you can not understand what they are saying for the most part. When the going gets tough, they are done like dinner or tell you to do really stupid things in an attempt to "fix" the problem. Their favorite solution is to format and reinstall all your software, causing you to lose everything in the process when a good tech could have diagnosed and fixed the problem without having to lose everything in the process *shameless plug*. I once bought a boxed system from a company called IPC and I will never do it again. As long as the computer runs, you will be ok. As soon as it breaks, though, you are screwed. you will see when it costs you $100+ to ship the box back to Dell just to have to wait a month to get it back.

I must second SirKenin on that one --- please don't get a Dell!! And this is coming from a Mac person at heart! My mother has gone through two Dells so far, and the second one is less than a year old and has already gone through 3 hard drives. Each time it was Windows that was causing problems, but because they don't know how to diagnose anything properly over the phone, their "solution" is to simply replace the entire drive, causing the owner to lose everything, unless they were able to backup their files beforehand. My Mom has lost soooo much because of this and she is not techno-enough to know how to do complete hard drive back-up at age 65.

(Personally, I use Macs (I have an Apple Titanium Powerbook laptop), but that is because I am in the web/digital media/print design field and that is the industry standard. There are many people that don't like Macs, even though some of them have never even tried them -- talk about biased! However, I have had wonderful experiences with Macs over the past 15 years after being frustrated with PCs. I find that I can configure them more to my own liking and to increase work productivity, rather than have to configure myself to the PC's way of doing things. Anyways, that is just *my* preference and personal experience talking.)

Still, I would love for you to have to avoid any potential problems with Dell -- if you are really heart-set on getting one, be sure to back up any and all important files on a regular basis, 'cuz when Windows decides to crash (and it eventually will) all Dell is going to say is that they will replace the drive for you.

Good luck in your search for a reliable PC...
