I never expected gifts of flowers and cards when I was just a simple vanilla girl going out on dates with boys. As I grew older (still vanilla) I never expected gifts on a first date, simple things like flowers. But when they were given, I was that much more appreciative of the gesture, and the man who extended such gestures. Such a gesture separated him from the rest in my mind's eye. Hell, I might even have gone to second base with him because I thought he was 'safe'.
Now, fast forward a few years. Stumbling through the non-pro D/s world, I find myself applying all of the rules of enagement from my vanilla relationships and dating rituals to the first meetings I have with submissive men. I'm not expecting gifts, but they're nice to have when surprised with them. I didn't notice that there was a difference in the ages of the men who gave gifts, and the men who didn't. So from my own perspective and what I've deduced from my engagement with men (vanilla and otherwise), the character of the man is rarely dependent upon his age, but perhaps dependent upon his understanding of women and a woman's expectations.
Just my 1.8 pence (allow for fluctuation in exchange rates and inflation).
