Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Just one of those days i am thinking how much i hate being in such a "small town" atmosphere. Don't get me wrong i love the less traffic and short commute times, but honestly, some days i feel like i am in a time warp!

I live near Ocean City, Maryland, which is just another word for summer tourist trap. We had an "adult sex store" open yesterday and it was the lead story on every news cast and the in the newpaper. Also chronicalled was why it could not legally be prevented from opening.  Ok, this is one small storefront in a strip mall on a 10 mile stretch. From what they showed of the sign/store front it is clear what the store is, but it is not tacky or totally obvious unless you stop to read it. They are blocking the windows from view and requiring ID to enter. I just don't get why having 1 lousy store for people to shop at is sooooooooooo bad. BTW they only sell videos, toys and lingerie. No rentals, no other services, etc...

You likely didn't know about the BR03 issue when they tried to hold their annual event in Ocean City.  Word leaked out to the press and there was a huge response from the locals and the hotel cancelled the contract, even though the event was in the off season and completely inside.  BR had to scramble to find new digs and replacements (and did a pretty good job of it) and went back to their old regular place in New Carrolton.

There was also a big stink over Dark Odyssey two years ago having their event in Hunt Valley when word of that got out.  That event still went on as planned and was very positive, there was much tension and the locals were not all happy with the situation.

Specially for Ocean City which is considered a family place (except for Senior Week), they will avoid ANYTHING that might somehow tarnish their image and detract from profits.

While you might not be too close to anything in MD- you aren't too FAR from anything either.

Yeah I know how you feel I grew up in the state of Maine and for me to get vibrator or a pair of cuffs I had to drive like four hours.  It was a crazy because there are so many great kinksters there and there is nothing like having sex outside in the open and all the nudist and stuff but still when it came to that shit they were horrible.

MsStick -> RE: Rural Frustration (3/22/2007 11:06:03 AM)

Hah, try rural Ireland  ;)  you'll view your town as a sprawling metropolis in jig time!

hereyesruponyou -> RE: Rural Frustration (3/22/2007 11:17:47 AM)

LOL, i am sure that is true!

And it is true i can be in DC or Baltimore in 2 hours, i just don't think i should have to go that far just to have fun. Thank goodness for the internet when it comes to shopping. My partner and i searched out a place in Rehobeth, DE last summer that i had heard was "awesome". He was hoping for some nicer butt plugs, since the town is known for it's gay male community. We walked in and saw a pitiful amount of stock at incredible prices (internet price plus about 25%). The people were nice and said anything we might want they could get for us.....well didn't say, yeah so can i, but....

Small town Oregon state here ....We have an adult shop with a 12 x 8 foot billboard you can see from the freeway.....the store comes complete with picketers out front carrying signs that say " Not in our town" so unless you want to visit between 10 pm and 2am you get harrassed

SusanofO -> RE: Rural Frustration (3/22/2007 11:27:02 AM)

In my town there is an adult video and toy store called "Dr. John's". This guy has made his career on the publicity he gets from people making a stink that he is located in their part of town. The locals won't (or can't) close him down, but keep making a big fuss he's in business.

I've been in that store, and it is actually what I would call pretty mild types of merchandise he is selling. I hope he doesn't close down, because he is the only business like this in town (as far as I know).

The last time he was interviewed on tv, he went as far as to say: "You know people, I just can't thank you enough for all of this free publicity. It always increases my business when you show my store on tv." I thought that was pretty funny.

LaTigresse -> RE: Rural Frustration (3/22/2007 12:05:22 PM)

Here in the happening college town of Iowa City IA, we have I think, two sex shops. The contents are quite humorous. Think fluffy bunny handcuffs and edible panties.

drawntothedark -> RE: Rural Frustration (3/22/2007 12:56:20 PM)

I live in Arkansas. On a Highway that leads to no where.
We have one shop here. It's very tame. In order to get better stuff we do have the option of driving to Little Rock (about an hour and a half away). They have several shops there. They even have one of those porn stores where you can pay money to watch porn in the back! When I saw it, I thought it was the coolest thing ever!!! (I need to get out more)

LaTigresse -> RE: Rural Frustration (3/22/2007 1:10:54 PM)

I do all my shopping online........saves gas and headaches.

Suleiman -> RE: Rural Frustration (3/22/2007 1:16:33 PM)

I've been stuck in a small town in rural california for the last three years, more or less. You'd think, living in california, that this sort of parochial attitude would be toned down if not non-existant, but when you get away from the big city areas, california turns out to be a closet red-state. San francisco is about three hours drive over bad roads, but it might as well be across the state line - our poor rustbucked can barely make it to the next town without dying. I think the nearest adult store is about 40 miles inland, on the other side of the hills. I know there's a thriving SM community hidden among the farms and communes, but I'll be un-buggered if I can't find it (parse that triple negative - I dare you!). This town is filled with a thriving mix of multi-generational rednecks (at least partially inbred, from the strong family resemblences), yuppie liberals trying to get in touch with nature, or their spiritual side, or their artistic side, or all of the above, and seasonal toursist who come here to pick trash off of the beach (our local landmark is actually the former dump. People scavenge bits of glass and other refuse that was pushed off a cliff a hundred years ago). I kind of liked it here, for about a week. For about three months after that, I was bored out of my mind. Now, I'm just trying to get through the day without killing someone.

I'll have to google that and take a trip! The owner of the shop here keeps being quoted saying "Relax, It's Only Sex".  if only people could handle that thought

StellaByStarlite -> RE: Rural Frustration (3/22/2007 2:18:57 PM)

We're in Youngstown, Ohio. It's very well located.. an hour or so from Cleveland, an hour or so from the Burgh, 6 hours from Chicago, 8 hours from NYC, 6 or 7 hours from DC. Fun freaky deaky times are just a day's drive away, if we really wanted.

Quiet, rural living within reasonable driving distance to a city is ideal to me. You get the best of both worlds, really. I'm more small city residential, but still, we're in the middle of everything. =)

ownedgirlie -> RE: Rural Frustration (3/22/2007 2:29:29 PM)

Not much in Sacramento, my State's Capitol, either.  I know of two stores in the entire area and one of them is mostly fluff.

Online Shopping.  It's a good thing.
