I've been stuck in a small town in rural california for the last three years, more or less. You'd think, living in california, that this sort of parochial attitude would be toned down if not non-existant, but when you get away from the big city areas, california turns out to be a closet red-state. San francisco is about three hours drive over bad roads, but it might as well be across the state line - our poor rustbucked can barely make it to the next town without dying. I think the nearest adult store is about 40 miles inland, on the other side of the hills. I know there's a thriving SM community hidden among the farms and communes, but I'll be un-buggered if I can't find it (parse that triple negative - I dare you!). This town is filled with a thriving mix of multi-generational rednecks (at least partially inbred, from the strong family resemblences), yuppie liberals trying to get in touch with nature, or their spiritual side, or their artistic side, or all of the above, and seasonal toursist who come here to pick trash off of the beach (our local landmark is actually the former dump. People scavenge bits of glass and other refuse that was pushed off a cliff a hundred years ago). I kind of liked it here, for about a week. For about three months after that, I was bored out of my mind. Now, I'm just trying to get through the day without killing someone.
