As far as practicing knots, they're overrated. One of the best rope tops I know, who gives demonstrations at shibaricon says that knots are only trouble, you want to use coils and more coils of the rope. The knot puts too much pressure at only one small point, coils spread the pressure out.
OK, let me explain. The knots I am talking about are like the Chinese button knot, or the double coin knot,or the Celtic trinity knot. Ones that you would add to a tie to make it more artistic. As far as the other kind of knots. Sometimes you want to add pressure to one small spot. Haven't you ever heard of a Happy Knot. As for using coils of rope, guess what those are called, friction knots.


Sorry, I'm like the Troll, I am worried about effeiency not prettiness, but good to know you are keeping up with that portion!!!!


Unlike you and the troll I'm worried about prettiness and efficiency. why make ugly knots on a pretty slave when you can make pretty ones?

Well, let's see, I HAVE a slave..oh wait that wasn't the question was it? I guess when I have one 24/7, I am more worried about everyday life than a little roleplaying, so I don't have time to practice hours and hours to make a pretty knot, unless it's a knot  I want to tie on my pretty slave.  I guess if all you are worried about is playtime, as it seems to be in your case I can understand your perception. That was not intended as a slam to anyone on this board that takes time and pride in their knots, just to the one I'm replying to.  I was a girl scout and all my knots work, so that's good enough for me, my slave, my submissive, and my outside boy.......K?

nop. that's why I practice knots. to be able to do them with speed and precision so the mood is not killed while I tie them.

You are wrong about me being wrong. You should go back and read my entire post rather just skim it and make a half ass answer that has absolutely nothing to do with the jist of the post.

The point is that there is only SO MUCH you can learn from practicing on your own and a LOT of things you can only learn by actually playing with someone.

If you scroll back to the post before that one, you will see that I said I do practice bondage knots. (However, its not a huge priority since all the ones I use were more or less engraved into my brain when I was a Boy Scout. See, mom, Scouts wasnt a waste of money!)

But sitting at home and tieing knots over and over again didnt prepare me for the time I put a girl in an immobilized position leaning against the bed with her weight accidentally pressing her chest into the bed, making it hard to breathe. Luckily, I beleive in open and honest communication rather than a safe word and she quickly told me and I very very quickly shifted her into a better position.

No amount of knot tieing could have prepared me for that or any of the other hundred of different ways you can screw up with bondage.

Further more, I can sit at home and tie knots and do maybe a handful of single limb and double limb bondage techinques, but there is quite a lot that I cant do to myself and actually have to do to another person.

You can only prepare yourself so much before you have to find someone who will say "Sure, I will let you do this thing you have never done before on me!"

The mantra about not doing things you havent done before on a bottom is almost as unrealistic as the one about how you shouldnt play with tops who arent experienced.

I've only read a few of the posts on this page. I'd like to comment on the issue of knots and intricate bondage.

I LOVE the aesthetics of it. It is beautiful. I've had beth model some basic Shibari rope work. In fact I think our profile has a picture or two. Last weekend we were invited to participate in a 4 hour seminar from a expert that we missed only because of a schedule conflict. It's not that I don't appreciate or want to do it, but WOW - it takes a LOT of time.

As an example, when we go to the Folsom Fringe, we usually get to the play area early. When we walk in there are already a few setting up their bondage scene. We'll walk past, and go to a different section of the room. Two or three hours later, we're near exhausted, having enjoyed a session or two, broken for refreshments, chatted with friends, watched some other's play, had another session or two; finally we walk by the Shibari area and the people we watched set up are "almost done".

I appreciate the dedication and the end result is amazing; but bondage to me is a means to the ends. beth sleeps and wears cuffs on wrists/ankles because I always have a clip or two nearby or in my pocket and should the spirit move me - it's on! What's on depends on my mood. The restricted movement, which is my reason for bondage, is facilitated easier with cuffs and clips. Same holds for bondage on furniture, a spanking bench, cross, or whatever. Leather harnesses, straps, belts, and cuffs, attached with clips allow for flexibility within the scene to change positions and access.

Intricate knots and bondage is beautiful. I see the foreplay aspect of wrapping and tying the knots. The end result is visually stimulating. I would have loved to have gone to the demonstration and would have enjoyed wrapping beth, if for no other reason other than the presenter was going to allow pictures. I think the end result pictures are great. I wish there was something along the lines of "Instant Shibari". Until then, I'll keep my bag of clips handy.

With that I agree. At some point you need to try your knowledge and play with someone to learn more.

Lucky you. I'm still trying to do right a lot of knots. and I know that my knowledge on that is almost 0 that's because I still practice them when I can (It will be nice to try them on a beautifull submisive but that will need to wait)

True. nothing can prepare you for when something goes wrong.
oh and I don't think it was luck. It was you being a caring master that knows anything can go wrong.
