Okay... So... I understand that the owner of a chat room here has the right to ban anyone they wish... Well... I got banned for trying to help someone else who was banned.

I had made aquaintence with a person on this site and then found they had been banned from a chat room for being a "bot"..... This person was not in fact a "bot" which was obvious from getting to know them. The problem was that they had entered the room using a name with "bot" in it which was for a script they used elsewhere... I don't know much about that stuff so I cannot explain it further.... Anyway, I spoke up for this person in the room saying he was not a bot until I was able to speak to a moderator. At first I thought it was a joke they were playing among friends banning him.  So, we took it to private. I had been trying to relay messages back and forth between the two until they agreed to discuss it on their own.... I don't know why I get myself into these things but I wanted to help....... It ended with me saying I was leaving the room, in the room, saying if any of my new friends wished to continue chatting, to please email me and we could, but for that time I didn't wish to be in the room any longer. The room owner then banned me saying I posted a "public message" in the room which is not allowed in any chat room. He would not define this to me. I argued that I had done nothing wrong. I had merely tried to help a friend and had never been a problem in the room before. I would not apologize.

So... now... a few days later..... I am still banned. However the reason listed when I try to sign into the room is that I am a "hacker"...... which I am not, have never been, nor will ever be! Can anyone tell me what I can do about this? I fear it may be giving people the wrong idea about me, and since it is a LIE... I want it to be taken down........

Sorry this is such a ramble of a post... I am just soooo irritated.....

create a new ID

BTW, how many of the chatroom friends emailed you after you made the dramatic exit?

Pretty much like you said...the owner of a chat room owns that room and s/he can do whatever s/he wishes.  I wouldn't worry overly much.  This is, after all, the Internet, not life.  But, if it truly troubles you, then send the owner a private email.  You don't have to apologize, simply say that you misunderstood the terms.  You didn't realize that telling people to email you privately was a public message, although if you stop and think about it, it certainly is.  Ask if you can be put on moderation with the end result of having the ban lifted.  Good luck.

Is this a collarme chat room?
wouldnt collarme own chat rooms?

What is this Owner of the Chat room?
Is that the Person who makes up the name and creates the room?

How can any chat room be owned- just because some one makes the room up
it is still not a public room- just as these are public forums?

I don't know about this stuff  but I'd ask a moderator

Oftentime the moderator is the owner.  The best thing to do is either make up a new ID or just forget about it.  I mean, there are thousands of chat rooms.

Personally, I'd just ignore it and move on.  If the owner of the room is that petty you can bet there are much better rooms to be in than that one.

I agree.  But it seemed important to the OP.  Like I said, this is the Internet folks.  If someone bans you, you can always find another.

i don't understand the problem really. You told them you were leaving the room - which is why you got banned in the first place for posting it to everyone in such a public way.  Why do you want to go back now?

It is not that I want to go back, so much as that it is being said that I am a hacker, which I am not. As well, the room as a whole is a good room, that I have been enjoying chatting in. I just don't get on well with the owner, who I don't need to chat with, nor want to.

Personally, in the great big scope of life..........I don't see this as being anything worth getting your panties in a bunch.

It was the overdramatic exit and dissing of the channel in public that probably got you banned.

I moderate a channel on another network and would have banned for the same reason, especially if the person hadn't agreed to the terms set by the room's moderators.

If you're not going back, does it really matter?

~Kara

I have strong opinions on banning people.
I ran a message board for three years.  It had about 1500 members.   I only banned two members the entire three year period and that was because they were playing around with children, and I had proof.
Just because a person makes a statement doesn't mean it is correct.  Two wrongs do not make a right.  In my opinion, people who ban people at the drop of the hat, are on a power trip and should not be allowed to operate a chat room.
So, bandit 25, what you do now is open your own chatroom and say no one is banned here.

Regards,  MissSCD

It was not a "dramatic exit" nor did I dis the channel by any means...... I merely said something along the lines of: "I'm leaving the room, if anyone would like to chat please email me"..... I did not, nor would I put down the room.

To the op:

I would not worry about this.  They will not be very successful if they continue to treat people this way.

Like I said, start your own room.  I would not change my name.  You did nothing to get banned.

Thank you for your reply on this topic. I am very much like you in my views on the matter. I as well have run a few basic chat rooms over the years and the only times I have ever banned anyone is due to proven harrassment of other members or scrolling (in which case i probably just kick them out and only ban if they come back and do it again, which most don't bother with)...... Everyone's opinions are valid, and as you said two wrongs do not make a right. In the end, yes it was his choice to ban whoever he wishes, and I understand that....... but... that doesn't make it *right*.....

Generally, I wouldn't care..... because it is just a person with a chat room. However, it is one of the most popular chat rooms on this site. Being banned from it prevents me from meeting people with a specific similar interest who may not see my profile or have such things declared in their own. As I said before, however, my main concern, is that because it is such a popular room, that my name may be tainted towards many other people on this site from the false reason he claimed to ban me.

Ok..yes, online is a bit different but...

If you own a bar, you set a standard for the people and the behaviours you allow in it.  People who don't comply get heaved out by the bouncers.

It's the same in a chat room.

It's ok to argue with a moderator and make your point (respectfully).  However, they won't back down if they feel their standards are being compromised.  That's just the way it is.

And yup, I've been banned before.  Mainly for calling the owner bad names.  And you know what?  I totally deserved it.  He probably didn't appreciate being called a mysoginistic (sp?) pig.

Make your own chat room and be successful, and you'll soon forget about those who banned you.

Like I said already... He can set his standards, and that is fine... All I did was ask him, respecfuly in private to reconsider his actions based on some other circumstances which I brought to his attention that he had not known.

Gosh, I would agree 100% if I had gone to him saying something like "You (BEEP BEEP BEEP) Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah (BEEP BEEP BEEP)" but.... I didn't.....
