Millie tried to rise quickly from the floor, but slipped on her ankle-length mousy brown hair and inevitably, gravity took its course as her feet flew from underneath her and she landed flat on her back, her head knocking against the bed as she went down. She stared up between the slates of her bed, seeing only stars above her, and drifted into the nebulous blackness, losing consciousness as she bled from a scalp wound. Martha, her friend from work, came by to pick her up for the day shift, as she has not yet learned to drive, and found Millie on the floor. She immediately called 911, and soon the paramedics were bundling Millie up and carrying her out through the cold snow to the hospital. Millie awoke to the sound of an electric clipper, and screamed as she realized her precious matted mousy hair was falling from the floor, the cool breeze of the hospital running over her bare scalp.
