No clue of it's official title. It was a "PC Clone" (is that what we called it?  or IBM Clone) with two 5 1/4" floppy drives and a boot-up disc.  I moved up in the world when I got a 386 - HP I think.  Later I had a MacSE/30 which was way cool at the time.

Altair.. eight switches and a button.  I bought it through an advert in Analog

BrainSlugs83 -> RE: What was your first computer? (3/25/2007 1:14:05 AM)

TRS-80 Model 4, It was all one solid unit, built in black and white screen, 5.25" disks, and keyboard -- it also had a tape drive, DOS, basic rom -- I learned to program on this thing...

Later I had a commodre vic 20, and 64... no DOS... I had to write a program in basic to format disks... and load a file called "$", which would list as a line numbered basic program that showed the contents of the disk (no folders, each line was a program name, it wouldn't run as it was all syntax errors)...

my first PC was an 8Mhz 8088 with CGA graphics and PC speaker for sound... I was happy when we finally got a 16 Mhz 286 with EGA! ...  my first modem was 2400 baud...

Altair
I read somewhere, that althought the Altair couldn't really do much, it caused radio interference, and you could program it with fancy math calculations, turn on a stereo to the right freq and you could play music via a computer program...

a 486 i think. Only had it for a bit. Eventually upgraded to a pentium 1 lol.
Good ol' Windows 3.1 and DOS games =)

SirDiscipliner69 -> RE: What was your first computer? (3/25/2007 3:06:16 AM)

I ended up getting a HP 386 SX16 with a vga card

I put in Corel Draw 1 and wanted it to do wonders.

I remember hitting keys and waiting for it to do stuff thinking it wasn't responding.

The item I chose was a  complex sample drawing of an old train as used in the old west.

My friend and I were disapointed but for the rest of the evening it redrew stuff just based on the original set of keystroked commands.

Think I had something like 20 megs of ram.

I remember I found this monsterous computer that was used in a bank.

The floppies on that must of been the size of old 45s or larger.

Think it was the using a Unix operating system.

I remember also coming across lots of cassette tapes with info stored on them from programs

A Commodore C64. Oh yeah. Tricked out with a disk drive and 14" RCA color tv/monitor. Then I had a Kaypro, with 64 k of RAM...same as the C64...using the CP/M operating system. Two floppy drives, monochrome monitor...the works!! I can't remember if it ran on kerosene or coal.

That would probably be worth something to a collector in mint.

Pc Pro mag just ran a issue about selling retro computers.

So I imagine your color was CGA?

I use to remember the various color adapters as they progressed this way:

CGA - crappy graphic array

EGA - thought I remembered it but guess not [image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m10.gif[/image]

VGA - very good array

SVGA - super graphics

running 64 megs of ram you must of been flying!

My first computer was a Commodore 64 that I ordered through the Sears and Roebuck catalog store.   It had the big ass actually "floppy" floppy disc, and a green monitor.  To get it to actually DO anything, you had to program it yourself. I remember the owners manual that came with it..it had several programs you could duplicate...so I spent an entire day once typing in completely nonsensical letters and numbers, and I created a program that showed planets and moons floating across the screen for about 15 seconds! Whoohoo..time well spent lol  Finally I was able to find a storebought program..."The Legacy of the Ancients" OMG, I LOVED it....My dad and I used to play it together..he'd go into the towns and gamble and win a whole bunch of money that I could then go out and buy supplies with to fight the evil monsters. It was a great time :)

A VIC20. It took cassettes and could be plugged into the TV for the monitor. I don't know "specs" on it.
We later had a Commodore 64 with both cassette tape and 5 1/4" floppy option. Green monitor...my favorite games were Jumpman and a highly amusing Barbie game. (I was young.)

Yes I am glad you mentioned that you were younf..love your pics btw....

I remember so many plugging in the TV as a monitor

I remember we had an  Atari from Sears to play pong

A Franklin 2000 - A Apple II+ clone with a top quality CPM card.  This was on of the last Franklins to have desent compatibilty with the Apple.

I was always of the IBM family as I could do Lotus 123 spread sheets and then get into the graphics.

I rmember popping in a modem and discovering the world of BBS and then text Internet

think the first modem I had was 300 baud?

I remember progressing to 1200, 2400, and then winmodem, 9600 ect.

I got into BBS and even went out and bought a copy of WILDCAT! 4 BBS

I am looking at the box in fact of "The World's Most Popular BBS Software"

Wonder how much this box w/ 5.25 & 3.5 disks is worth?

Glad you like the pics...it's about time to add more, I need to resize some recent photos.
I learned to program in BASIC (not VisualBasic!) on the Vic and the Commodore. We had the Atari, with many games (I'm the youngest of three kids, we played it a LOT) including Warlords, PacMan, Yars Revenge, and multiple others (I remember what the screens looked like but not the names of the games).

On the VIC we played the text based turn games...I was never the greatest at those, but I'd try anyway.
