windchymes -> Advice on mp3 players? (3/25/2007 5:05:14 PM)

Hi gang,

I received an inexpensive unknown off-brand mp3 player for Christmas.  Inexpensive because it was a gift from one of my kids, poor college student.  I know you get what you pay for....but, I fell in love with it and played it quite often. This past weekend at work, I played it continuously for almost 9 hours each day.  Well, today, it seems to have totally crapped out on me for no reason.  It suddenly said there were "No Files Found", even though when I plugged it into the computer via the usb port, the files were all there.  Then, it just froze up totally.

I did some shopping on Amazon and read a lot of reviews of several other brands, and found that most well-known and more expensive brands do the exact same thing after a a couple of months!

I'm looking for advice and opinions based on your experiences with your mp3 players.  I absolutely don't want an iPod or Zune.  I want one that supports mp3 and wma files, because I like to do my downloads from WalMart. (88 cents a song!)  I looked at some Sandisks and Creative Zens, but read quite a lot of negative comments from their users.  The one that had virtually no negative comments and was in my price range was the Cowon iAudio G3 2GB.  I'm looking for something under $150 and 2 to 4 GB.

All comments and suggestions are appreciated!

I have a Sony Lyra.  I liked it so much that when I wanted a new one I just got another one with more memory.  They're very user friendly, hold quite a bit of music off the shelf, and can be upgraded with a memory card.

Hi Windchymes....

First off, your little mp3 player probably/should have a tiny pin hole for a ''reset button''. Have you tried this? Sometimes they freeze up and you have to reset them. I'd use a paper clip or a saftey pin.

Like you, I refuse to purchase an Ipod and have instead purchased quite a few inexpensive little mp3 players. Mine get beat to hell bad because I use them at the gym and while running. To date....honestly, I've never had a single problem with a one of them.

Here's what I have and a few comments about each :

Creative Zen Nano 1gb - Works great, good sound, tough.Has a decent little program for organization and two little triple A batteries seem to last long. Has a voice recorder, also. Paid : 69.00 and 15.00 rebate

Creative Umno 128mb - Same things as above but with less memory and features Paid : 19.99

Panisonic Cube 2gb
- Works awesome. great sound and one alkaline double A battery makes it last for fifty to eighty hours. Paid : 39.00

Transcend 610 2gb - This one works great, also. Great sound… Lota nice little features with this one, including a voice recorder. Has a built-in rechargeable lithium battery that's charged up through the usb port. paid : 69.00 - 20.00 rebate

Truly 510  512mb - another nice little player with built-in rechargeable battery and picture viewing screen. Great sound and graphics. Paid : 59.00 10.00 rebate.

Like I said....all of them are used regularly ; I leave one in each of my vehicles and have one in my office and in my gym locker. Never had a problem with a one. My favorites are the Transcend and the Panasonic, with the Zen Nano coming in a close second.

windchymes -> RE: Advice on mp3 players? (3/26/2007 1:42:21 PM)

Thank all of you for the great suggestions and advice.....no, don't want an ipod, they don't support .wma files and I really want that capability.

I guess what I'm really disillusioned about is how commonplace the freezing up and wiping out of all the files is that they all seem to do!   That they're almost considered "disposable".  For the cost, you'd think the quality would be a LOT better.

Utopian, I had heard about the pinhole, and looked all over it for one, but there doesn't seem to be one anywhere.  I talked to my son today, and he told me he actually paid almost $100 for it...I thought it was a lot cheaper.

Hydro, I saw the Lyra and liked the description, but when I read the reviews, they weren't so good!  Then again, a lot of times you don't hear from people when things are good, but only when they have something bad to say....it's in the list of those 'under consideration' lol

Well...still undecided on which to buy for replacement, but thanks again![:)]

As far as i'm aware most mp3 players dont play wma files. They would need to be converted to mp3s.
An ipod you just use itunes instead of windows media player which produces better quality anyway.

I'm surprised it doesn't have one, although sometimes they are hard to find. I think you can get a nice one to your specifications for under a hundred bucks - They seem to be getting cheaper all the time.

Good luck.

I'm going to be pedantic here but windchymes said she wants an mp3 player that supports wma and no mp3 player i know of will play them direct. You can convert them yes but you can convert wma to play on an ipod too. Why download a converter when you can get an ipod and then itunes does everything?
Oh and thank you for the pic compliment, i look a little red faced though dont ya think lol? Wonder what id been doing? [;)]

I love my ipod shuffle. I've had it for almost a year I play it constantly and if anything goes wrong and you've ordered it online apple is really good about fixing it. And they have the best headphones and when those crap out they send you a new pair free. And the shuffle it only about 80 bucks which is cheaper than some of the other more expensive mp3 players.

I bought an RCA MP3 on sale.  It is sporty version because it has a pedometer on it. I believe it was $59 and its working great.  Because I heard that lithium batteries are only good for 8 or 9 hours before they need a charge, I went with battery-operated and invested in rechargeable batteries.  This might be something to consider when you make your purchase.  I went with the RCA since many co-workers bought a discounted MP3 and are having  trouble with it.  Some of the store chains have a customer review section on their websites, that might be helpful as well.

I use my MP3 for audio books.  My local library now offers free downloads ~ I can do it all online.  Sorry, I know that part is not particularly helpful to you, but I am just so excited about not having to actually buy an audio book anymore because they can be pricey.

Best wishes,
Christine
