"FBI chief: Don't change Patriot Act"

POSTED: 11:41 a.m. EDT, March 27, 2007

" "Last year the administration sought new powers in the Patriot Act to appoint U.S. Attorneys without Senate confirmation and to more freely use National Security Letters," Leahy said in opening remarks. "The administration got these powers, and they have badly bungled both."

In a review of headquarters files and a sampling of four of the FBI's 56 field offices, Inspector General Glenn A. Fine found 48 violations of law or presidential directives during 2003-2005. He estimates there may be as many as 3,000 violations throughout the FBI that have not been identified or reported.

When Fine testified before the Senate panel last week, Leahy said, "In light of this report, we need to consider whether Congress went too far" in the Patriot Act in removing restrictions on FBI use of national security letters.

In a House Judiciary Committee hearing with Fine, Republicans and Democrats warned the FBI could lose that broad power. "

In short, I think the Patriot Act was a knee jerk reaction to the fear people felt after being attacked on home soil. The president took advantage of that fear.

I believe that it is deeply unconstitutional and undermines the values our country was built upon. I cannot imagine it staying as it is.

that gave bush and clan the golden opportunity to spy on all rivals for starters.  should pay off well in future deals for him.

The State Security apparatus will alway want more power than is good for the people.

It's the most invasive, degenerative legislation ever proposed/enacted on the masses of people in this country. It's an internal measure that's both designed to notify and protect the masters at the earliest stages of an internal rebellion.

It's also akin to a family of people installing the most sophisticated, expensive security system in their home that money can buy, and then going to sleep at night with their front door wide open.

It should be dismantled immeadiately.

By any chance did you ever work for a guy named ''slick willie''?  You bear a striking resemblance to Mike McCurry, his former press secretary [8|]

agreed!  including all the bullshit acts, laws, eo's, ordinances, and anything else that was connected to or as a result of it.  Of course they always forget about that part and are usually happy just getting the big issues overturned thus we always lose ground to the current.
