I haven't actually been involved with one myself, but i've always thought they were mostly used for breath play and aroma play...or simply as a face covering for people with a rubber fetish.

They're a fucking good gag substitute. Masks are superior to gag's in that + They leave the mouth and nose free. + (Anything involving sensory deprivation and suspension risks motion sickness). As a switch, I've been on both sides of a mask, and they are great for breath play. The breath control doesn't even have to be that dramatic ... just an ocasional hand over the hose during other types of play, can really emphasize who is in control, and it's a different feeling than other types of breath play. Just the feeling of having it slipped on and adjusted is a big rush to most, and the field of vision from inside is a unique sensation as well. I've had a Mistress blow smoke up the tube, or actually do rebreathing by blowing her own breath up the tube ... both were a real turn on. Any type of aroma play is heightened when using a mask. Of couse there usually is a slight smell of rubber present too, which adds a bit to the mix. Since they usually cover most of the face, they also can have a sort of depersonalizing effect, which plays on the minds of both participants.

As someone who wears an industrial respirator regularly I can tell you you become acutely aware of breathing when you wear one unless you are very focused on the work at hand. The sound of your breathing as well as the effort required to breath being considerably more, can easily be perverted towards breathplay or sensory deprivation.
