There is a new product out in Sweden that is being sold to help women prevent rape. I was going to place this in one of the several threads about that subject, but thought that it deserved its own.
The opinions on the website are all in Swedish, but there is a good chunk of the site in English and I think this looks like a good idea. It's a shame that it had to come to such a product, but I still think it's a good idea.

Combine the two, and any rapist that is stupid enough to try and have his way is going to find a nasty surprise.

My advice, Rape him back. Carry along a short cutt off broom handle and sodomize him, I doubt he'll ever try again. lol.

Unfortunatly, if you try that chances are you will go to jail and he will go free. That's the beauty of the American Justice System (please note the sarcasm). I work in criminal justice and have seen women spend time behind bars for using self defence when attacked while the man that attacked them goes free because of a technicality.

None of those items will ever work if he manages to get it away from you. Or other wise has someone subdued like grabbing the arms an torso from behind. And anyway how likly are you to have that wepon in hand AT ALL times. And spraying them with something or stabbing them will only make them angry, It's not garentee'd he'd stop.

Well, the thing about the FemDefence is that it is inside your body. Although I do agree with you, which is why I will never carry mace, if someone gets it from you it can be used on you. I have a rape whistle and a small weapon that I am fully trained in.

Hehe, that is true. After I was attacked I started training in a new style that emphasized self defence, pressure points and things like that. I asked that my sensei attack me unexpectedly so that I knew I could defend myself even if I wasn't expecting it. That worked very well, he even attacked me on the street when I was out running and I was able to defend myself, it made me more confident and I feel safer when I am out.

I actually recommend that all women take a self-defense course (preferably in Kenpo or a similar form of "black uniform martial arts") and have get a guy to practice on. There are moves that some courses will teach you that are great to use on a woman, but would never (or very rarely) work on a guy. Most colleges offer such courses and they are often available at athletic clubs and gyms. Just a thought to throw out there, just want everyone to be as safe as possible [:)]

I did a self-defence course.... I recommend it, definitely. I still don't do stupid things like walk alone down unlit streets at 2am, but I do feel safer walking in the evenings. They just taught us little tricks that could save your life in a dangerous situation... but none of them guarantee anything. If I was attacked by two or three men at once, I doubt I'd get away. Common sense has, and will always be, the best protection.

Although I do like that cute lil thing from Sweden *grins* Thats nasty, I like it!!

Y'all know FemDefense isn't "real" right? It's a project designed to raise awareness of sexual violence done as an "advertising" campaign. Metafilter did a little blurb on it not long ago.

Still, it's a fairly effective awareness raiser, no?

Admitedly, I thought so too until the partner clued me in. He read me part of the woman's mission statement. It was pretty ingeneous.

Kenpo is great. Although I prefer Tang Soo Do. Korean style similar to Tae Kwan Do.
