I thought The Desent was lame...  not much action really, and just... lacking. But, that's just my opinion. [:)]

If you don't like bugs, Arachnophobia is probably a good one [:D], The Innocents (adapted from "A Turn of the Screw, 1961) is a nice gothic flick, The Blob (ok, not scary now, but when I was younger... [sm=hair.gif]... ditto for The Stuff), Silence of the Lambs (for psych thrills), The Exorcist (original and remake), The Shining (well, most of Stephen King's movies are fairly nice),  the Alien movies are nice for gore,  and most of what everyone else mentioned.

I don't care for horror movies, but I worked on the movie The Reaping with Hilary Swank that comes out next Thursday.

Hostel was one of the worst films I have ever had the misfortune to see. It was dull, unimaginative and in poor taste. I never cared about the characters and I was rooting for the bad guys to kill everyone so this dismal cinematographic nightmare would end. Avoid Wolfs Creek too... it was better than Hostel but not by much. House of Wax was equally bad and the only thing worthwhile in that film was seeing Paris Hilton meet her untimely (and well deserved) demise.

There are a few horror films that I can really get behind but it really boils down to a simple formula for me: Could it happen? Do I care about the characters? Did it captivate my imagination enough to inspire some level of terror? If the film does not meet those three things it really has little chance to end up on my shelf of DVD's. Merely making me squirm a little with graphic violence doesn't necessarily make a good horror film.

A few horror movies that I do own:

The Hellraiser series - 1-3 were very good but after that you really have to be a fan of the series in order to really enjoy the other 5 or 6 that they made. Pinhead may well be one of the most evil and terrifying characters ever. Clive Barker is a genius.

The Ring - Not so much a hack and slash but a psychological thriller with some very interesting ideas. When the makers of The Ring made the first one they told a story, when they made the second one (a bad idea because the first one was great) they set out to make a horror film and didn't make it the psychological venture that the first one was.

They - Again this movie isn't hack and slash but provides adequate theatrical scares in addition to the plausibility of it actually being able to happen.

Event Horizon - In space with so much unexplored: anything can happen. Enough blood and guts to make it fit your needs.

Mind Hunters - Not so much a horror flick as it is a suspense/drama but it has a decent story and pretty cool ideas as to how to kill off its characters.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (remake) - I didn't like the original... I turned it off about halfway through. The remake, however is good without being as insulting as the first one.

John Carpenter's The Thing - The original is a classic "B" grade horror film with some witty dialog and great chemistry between characters. The remake is closer to the original short story entitled Who Goes There... I forget the author at the moment. The special effects are a little hokey due to the films age (we are now used to computer enhanced graphics) but that does not detract from the story or the overall feel of horror. It conveys an uncanny feeling of isolation.

Darkness Falls - OK... this is a guilty pleasure for me. It is an average horror film but for some reason it scares me.

Jeepers Creepers - The first one was the best. It was brutal and gory and did its job in entertaining me.

House on Haunted Hill - As a kid I saw the original and it gave me nightmares. The idea of a killer haunted house just creeps me out. Bizarre enough with ample blood.

I hope this helps a little.

The Exorcist has got to be the all time best horror movie ever made.....get the director's cut with the added scenes,,,he descent down the staircase will give you the willies!  he Exorciam of Emily Rose was good t\also...i wouldn't recommend falling asleep and letting it play on the TV...the sounds got incorporated into a dream i was having, and i woke up screaming....talk about bone-chilling!

13 ghosts is great too....my personal favorites are vampire movies.....the Blade trilogy is pretty good, loved Van Helsing and the Underworld movies.....not big on the slasher movies...seen one, you've pretty much seen them all.  Right now, I'm watching Maximum Overdrive, made about 20 years ago, a steven king story.....great sound track though...all AC/DC!

OMG!  Arachnophobia was a blast!  I hate spiders, in fact, anything with more than four legs on it in my house is a grease spot on the floor, but i saw it with my roomie in the theater when i was released....now, i'm a little sick fucker when it comes to scaring people in a theatre....remember when the actor (just lost his name) was stalking the big spider on the wall of the bedroom?  Right before he whacked it, I hollered "LOOK OUT!" in the theatre....scared my roomie so bad, she jumped and the brake on her wheel chair popped off and she started to roll down the aisle!  Made everyone scream and jump!  Did the same thing during one of the friday the 13th movies i saw....one of these days, I'm gonna do it and get jumped, but it's so much fun!  [sm=evil.gif]

servilecat -> RE: Recommend Some Good Horror Movies For Me To See.... (4/18/2007 1:08:18 AM)

Sadly most movies have become terribly predictable.  It's difficult to see a new concept.  The Saw movies were very predictable.  i prefer old school usually such as original movies.  For some reason though, 13 Ghosts really messed me up.

Try Terror of Tiny Town....my cousin is in it..oh, no, that's a western...

Sinimint -> RE: Recommend Some Good Horror Movies For Me To See.... (4/18/2007 5:09:50 AM)

All the Saw movies (hey servilecat - predictable - truly? - you actually guessed the ending??????????????????  far out).

Hellraiser (all of them:))

Dusk Til Dawn (because George Clooney was so hot as a baddy, and Selma Hayek - mmmmm what more can you say:))

Definately Shaun of the Dead - it was so funny....
