Home Depot hands down. the people at Lowes don't have a clue what they're doing.

It depends on what kind of project you're doing...Home Depot is more contractor oriented while Lowes is more geared to the homeowner and has more interior design items.  For any serious kinds of projects, we use local lumber yards.  Their lumber selection is much better and they give contractor discounts.
edited to add...lumber yards almost always include free delivery of large orders.  So, no loading and unloading of heavy items like 200 2x4s.

well- no home depot here. lowes is ok for some things- coles- a local chain is better for advice and service- lowes is not always cheaper...

Home Depot...we were in there over the weekend.  We were getting impatient waiting for the plumbing guys to get off the phone....one of them was on a personal call.  When we walked away the one on the business call came running up the isle apologizing and aksing if he could help.  He then spent another hour helping my sister pick out her new sink.  No one at Lowes would ever show that kind of customer service.  We're usually lucky if we can find an employee at all let alone someone that knows what the hell they're talking about.

it is mindboggling what one can spend on "hardware" even just cabinet knobs.

these places are exciting for me.  1. i love to see the styles and get ideas for my place.  2. sexy muscular men, the type that wear tool belts are bigtime eye candy!!!!!!!

yehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

ya know- parts are one thing. but decent labor is another. contractors want big jobs. and the guys that claim they can do stuff often are shoddy. add in the 2-3x the original cost.

fixing ones home up- is very good for teh owner- the neighborhood and teh community,
