This is more a META post than an off-topic post, but I was cruising through the list archives today, revisiting some old topics I enjoyed and got curious about...and I noticed HOW many of the profiles of people who asked advice, asked questions, made responses (sometimes very passionately) have just disappeared.

Now, certainly this is not a new phenomena- especially when people are new to a site or the net they are still "finding themselves" and how they fit into this new media. Changing names or not fitting into things is quite common.

But do you think there's any way to change it? Is it just how we work in life or is there some specific reason this happens and a way to alter the outcome?

I think most people who come here do so as individuals. They are not partnered or being mentored. So the decision to leave is made as an individual with no checks on their thoughts, feelings, or goals. I don't know how to change that.

On small mailing lists it is possible to contact any person who drops off the list to find out why they did so and to offer guidance to the person. Perhaps they might reconsider or perhaps they can be redirected or perhaps simply wished a good life. But this is such a large board ... I don't think there are enough volunteers to handle the volume of work something such as that would require.

But I have noticed the high drop-out rate and agree that it is sad.

Some people get disillusioned, I think. Posting passionate thoughts, no matter what side you are, opens you up to attack. And those attacks are too easy to take personally.

Some folks you miss a lot more than others.
