After what seems to be far too long, the Tuskegee Airmen were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. The sacrifices and dedication that these men endured for our country should have been recognized years ago. I understand that the movie made a few years back was to bring attention to them. Find below a small snipet from the headlines today. quote: WASHINGTON — President Bush saluted the Tuskegee airmen on Thursday, six decades after they completed their World War II mission and returned home to a country that discriminated against them because they were black. "Even the Nazis asked why African American men would fight for a country that treated them so unfairly," Bush told the group of legendary black aviators, who received a Congressional Gold Medal — the most prestigious Congress has to offer. "These men in our presence felt a special sense of urgency. They were fighting two wars. One was in Europe and the other took place in the hearts and minds of our citizens." I think the fact that the Republican's didn't bother to plan what to do with Iraq because they were busy cutting funding at the VA pretty much tells the troops all they need to know.

On the one hand, we cut funding for VA hospitals. Consign them to purgatory in Iraq and not ever let them come home. Stop-Loss. Evening Gents, This being the same funding that was cut under the previous administration to points of having vets turned down for various services at the hospitals? The Bush administration has made many mistakes, I cannot and will not deny that. The troops and funding them are a completely seperate issue. My point was more along the lines of protesting the burials of fallen soldiers and those type of activities. I wish you well, Thadius

When did Republicans start protesting the burials of soldiers? They want to just leave them in Iraq because it is cheaper? Hadn't heard about that but it wouldn't surprise me.

Just heard an interview with one of the Tuskegee Airmen on the CBC program As It Happens. Quite amazing the struggles these men had to endure just so they could risk their lives in the war. Their base was in the jurisdiction of a hostile sherif and it was a risk to life to leave the base. Even after proving themselves they sill faced outrageous prejudice. According to the one interviewed, some were lynched... in uniform. Z.

It was the Tuskegee airman that played a rather large role in forcing open the military to blacks and others. Unlike the other services, you couldn't fake being a good pilot nor could you hide being a bad one. The Tuskegee airmen were nothing short of amazing. I cried a couple of times watching the original. I am always a sucker for patriotic movies involving struggle and sacrifice.
