We have no problem adding any of those.  I like to add a little bit of all of them at once.

Lucky for me I am not an addiCTIVE type...

My drug of choice was alcohol but played with all the rest. After a couple of years in the slammer I finally gave it all up. Been sober 18-19 years come April. Smartest thing I ever did was quit........

while marijuana's not actually chemically addictive, the biggest drug problems in our area seem to be alcohol, marijuana, crack, cocaine, and prescription drugs. this is just from personal experience, though, and by no means from any actual real studies on the subject. marijuana, in my experience, is the second most popular drug here, with alcohol being the first. i live in a small city (150,000-200,000 population) with two major universities and one community college...so it's not surprising that alcohol and pot are the biggest issues.

my family mostly live in an area where crack and cocaine are the big problems (pot is also but it's so commonplace nobody even thinks about it anymore). it's more rural - a very tiny town in georgia that's hardly on any maps. most of my family, with the exception of one crack addict, is addicted in some way or another to prescription drugs, although many of my cousins use pot recreationally.

my personal experience with drug addiction was mostly with ephedra.

Meth. Big ol epidemic here in Okiville. I am pretty anti-any substance abuse but after seeing what Meth does I am tempted to ask congress to let me grow Weed and dole it out for free.

Vendaval:
I have never seen any credible evidence that cocain, marijuana, ecstasy or hallucinogenics were physically addictive substances.

I worked as a secretary for State Probation and Parole in Florida.  The saddest incident I recalled was a mother who signed papers in giving up her daughters to the Department of Children and Families for foster care because this inidividual could not give up crack cocaine.

That was a heartbreaking moment for me considering at that time, I had four stepchildren living with me and I wanted to be a better parent for them.

i know that marijuana is not physically addictive, and don't know that much about the properties of ecstasy or hallucinogenics, but here is some information on the way cocaine works physiologically.

quote:

For years treatment professionals told us cocaine was not physically addictive (some still do). Cocaine addicts were offered little support and frequently accused of being ‘weak willed' or of imagining withdrawal symptoms. Unlike heroin, alcohol or tranquillisers that have a dramatic withdrawal syndrome, inducing obvious physical symptoms, the physical addiction to cocaine takes place in the brain. Effectively over time with repeated use, your brain becomes addicted to cocaine. Cocaine attaches its self to the receptor sites in your brain where the pleasurable neurochemicals (dopamine especially) are stored, they then wash around in your system for a while making you feel high, before being excreted from your body and lost. The net result is that you are left with a shortage of dopamine, without enough dopamine you feel miserable and irritable and in extreme cases can experience what psychologist call adhenia where it is pretty much impossible to feel good about anything. Combine the crash we all feel when we come down with the knowledge that all can be instantly cured by another line and you have an extremely psychologically and physiologically addictive substance.

this is from http://www.cocaine-addiction.co.uk/q&a.htm

i've never heard that cocaine -wasn't- physically addictive. this site: http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/bb/neuro/neuro01/web1/Farrenkopf.html also presents an explanation of why cocaine is physically addictive.

nevertheless, i would respectfully point out that psychological addiction can in some cases be as harmful or more than physical addiction. i have a friend who is psychologically addicted to pot, and it, for her, is just as serious in some ways as many physical addictions i have seen.

Alright, changing the question to "addiction and abuse".
(Sometimes what is clear in your mind is not
 clear when you type!  lol)

Psychological addiction is common with any mind
altering substance, including cigarettes and caffeine.

I live in a college town located in a rural county.
The big problems here are alcohol, marijuana,
meth, ecstasy, hallucinogenics and prescription
drugs, especially painkillers.

We do not have much of the cocaine, crack,
downers or heroin problems compared to
the rest.

There used to be a bus service for downtown
at night that would take people from the bars
to their home for a very inexpensive cost,
just a few dollars.  Well, some people messed
that up too by picking a fight with a driver. [&:]

The binge drinking is really sad and destructive.
I find myself wondering how many of them will
go on to being complete alcoholics.  Damn shame!

And being a rural county we have areas where the
pot plants and the meth labs are easy to hide, until
something goes drastically wrong.

The biggest drug problem is the DEA/FBI/Commercial Prison industry, which profits by prosecuting and harassing people for what, without a Constitutional Amendment, isn't their fucking job.

Remember the Volstead Act? THAT was a time when the Federal Government kept to the things they were told to.

I hear you, FuckinTroll!  Pot-heads are usually lazy and
get the munchies, but those tweakers are crazy and dangerous!

farglebargle -> RE: Drug and alcohol addition problems (3/29/2007 9:13:36 PM)

Without Meth, people can't work that 2nd shift at Wal-Mart.

Never trust a drug which lets you work longer hours.

I think a more sensible less PC approach to the so called problems cause by so called substance abuse is required.

Just listened to a radio programme saying that Morocco was trying to eliminate marijuana farming. Presented as info. in the programme was the fact the farming had been going on since the 15th century.!!!

Councelling of all kinds seems to be a growth industry tho'. lol

meatcleaver -> RE: Drug and alcohol addiction & abuse problems (3/30/2007 2:17:07 AM)

There are six coffee shops with five minutes walk of my front door where you can buy dope legally, it really isn't a problem. I can think of 17 bars within five minutes walk of my front door, alcohol isn't a problem either, you can purchase it 24 hours a day if you're desperate. I can think of maybe three clubs within that five minutes where you can buy ecstacy, no problem. There are also two brothels (maybe three), a couple of peep shows, a couple of live sex acts, eight sex shops, probably all within that five minute walk from my door. I really don't have a problem.
