Who are your heroes and heroines? Who and why do you look up to and respect because of something they have said or done?

There is so much negativity at times, it would be wonderful to see the positive side to people. They don’t have to be famous. They may even be in the forum. They might even be your next door neighbour.

I feel it also opens a little insight into who people are.

For myself, Demon of course is top of the List. For His wisdom and patience with me and knowing who I am.

My beautiful parents, inside and out. Who allowed me to be who I could be, without judgement but with Love.

Jesus for his poetry and Guidance.

Sarah Maclachlan for all her selfless determination to help create a better enviroment and in the support of women.
World on fire.
Lilith Fair
SarahMclachlanMusicOutreach

Anastacia For what she has overcome and for what she is doing to help aid young women with breast cancer awareness. (Please america... support her musical gifts!)
Anastacia Fund BRCF

The Dali Lama for His peace, his wisdom, his patience and his message.
Remember the three R’s
Respect for self
Respect fro others
Responsibility for all your actions

Thora Hird for her comedy, for her faith and for her compassion.

My friend Michael, for all he was and all he gave and all he endured. His humour unending, his truth and his beauty.

Lady Shoshin. I love her thoughts and the way M’Lady verbalises her beliefs on the forum. They are never confusing or judgemental but always firm yet full of compassion.

Erin, never afraid to voice her thoughts.

Javert, He who commands.

Marilyn Manson For His articulate opinions and for His artistry.

Wow… I am going on too much… I am sure I will and can think of more, but how about everyone else? Is there someone you believe people may be all the richer for knowing of?

Peace and Love

Might not be what one would want to hear but,,,my parents. Thats about it. :)
Since many people in the "public eye" appear one way, and many have such good P.R. its a guess what they are like behind closed does. So while in some ways I may try to emulate some, I would be hard pressed to call them a "Role Model".

BlkTallFullfig -> RE: Who are Your Role Models? (4/13/2005 6:52:20 PM)

My heroes are people who do the right thing with the guidance of God, good upbringing, and well informed mind.
My father would be my 1st hero, because he was the strongest and kindest man I've known to date; he valued God, adored his wife, and tried to teach his children integrity and benevolence... He died much too soon, I miss him.

My next heros include Cornel West, Bono from U2, Amilcar Cabral, Kwame Toure, Nina Simone, Nikki Giovanni, Henry Louis Gates, Michael eric Dyson, Tavis Smiley, Bell Hooks, The Kennedys (don't ask me why), William Jefferson Clinton (despite his unruly penis)... I'll think of more.....
They are my heroes because they realize how rotten the world is, and still remain kind people and work toward the betterment of mankind.

In these forums, I admire and respect people in whom I notice above mentioned qualities: Intellect sprinkled with kindness and generosity of spirit: Onceburned/Chris, Protagonist Lily, MizSuz, Topcat (Lawrence), MercnBeth, Akasha, GoddessJules, BeachMystress, Dark Angel, Mistoferin (Erin), GoddessDustyGold, LdyAuburn, Synergy, SubEric, ProuSub, Siamsa, MizBerlin, My New Friend ShiftedJewel, etc...

I'll be back to add... M

My parents....

...for helping me to learn at a young age to be my *own* role model and not give a damn for others who try to put you down, as they are probably just as unsure about themselves. Once I was able to see the bullies/posers/etc for what they were, it gave me the strength to be who I am and who I wanted to be in my life.

I learnt to love myself, despite what others try to say, or those who try to pull you down in life. To live for myself and to love myself first, not in a greedy sense, but because I cannot fully give of myself to others, until I have a true understanding of myself and belief in my own strengths.

My parents taught me to create my own standards and goals in life, not those that the media or the masses thrust and impose on us. They taught me to look for the beauty in everyone and in everything in life. Granted there are times that it is hard to see it the way some people outwardly behave, but usually once you spend the time get to know someone, there is at least one positive thing about them, which can be used as a seed for more positive growth.

My parents taught me to share of my skills and experience with others, for it is through others that I have learnt and been taught. It is a form of karmic balance or circle of life to pass on that which was in turn passed on to you. (Gee, can you tell that I have the Soul of a Teacher in me?)

My parents taught me to value family and friendship above all. And not all "family" are the ones we are born related to, but also the ones that we choose to bring into our circle of life and love. (I have a very extended "family" as a result.)

I gave a lot of thought to this during the past year, as it is just over one year since I lost my 82 year old father suddenly to his 5th heart attack. He had already survived 2 types of cancer, countless surgeries, chemo and radiation therapy and a pacemaker. He had the true heart of a survivor, but his body no longer could keep up with him. I will dearly miss him. ::blinks tears::

I spent the majority of the past year with my mother, helping her to settle her life and affairs after my father's death. It was a difficult time for me in many ways, but it enabled me to spend more time with her than I had since I was in high school and still living with my folks. We bonded, if possible, even more strongly than before. My mother is now aware of my leanings as a Domme and, being raised in a boarding school by nuns she has a bit of a difficult time with the kink aspect, but definitely understands the dynamics of a leader/follower or domme/sub relationship. She has seen me happier and more fulfilled as a result and that is all that matters to her in the long run. All in all I think she is wonderfully cool for a Lady that is about to turn 65 in June and I am so proud that she is my Mom.

Yep, I would have to say my parents have been my life's role models. They truly gave me the strength to be who I am today -- and that is a person who is proud of my achievements, pleased with my various relationships and that I love myself for who I am. I could die tomorrow and say that I am content that I have done my best to live my life to my fullest, to love and be loved.

DesertRat -> RE: Who are Your Role Models? (4/14/2005 12:40:48 PM)

Right off the top of my head, I come up with these:

Bill Murray: He's funny, but seems nice, compassionate and deep too. I would love to meet him.

Eddie Lawson: The greatest American motorcycle racer to date. He won the 500cc Grand Prix World Championship four times. He had a very mature, very focused style and spoke his mind with clarity and authority. I hope I bump into him someday.

Niki Lauda: Three-time Formula 1 champion. Reminds me of Lawson. Not a flamboyant guy, just quiet, determined, and VERY good. I did get to meet him at the USGP in Detroit.

Jimmy Clark: Probably the greatest driver ever. He was my idol when I was kid, so I've read a lot about him.

This list is subject to revision. I mean, those guys will still be on it, but I might think of some seriously humanitarian types to add.

Bob

Peter Piot, for being willing to risk his body in hot zones (militarily and biologically dangerous) in order to gain first hand information on poorly understood plagues.

Lady Shoshin, for her boundless empathy and compassion.

Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin for their vision and selfless sacrifice.

Manawyddan -> RE: Who are Your Role Models? (4/16/2005 6:05:19 AM)

I can think of a couple of people who have been role models for me in the past, but every single one of them I no longer view favorably at all (although I acknowledge that they may have been the right person in the right time to have had a good influence in my life).

Having become religious in the last two years, I have a certain reverence for the patriarchs and matriarchs of my tribe, but Judaism being a rather 'warts and all' religion it's hard to view them exactly as role models ...

MrThorns -> RE: Who are Your Role Models? (4/16/2005 8:40:33 AM)

Nice topic...

When I was growing up, one of my role models was Chuck Yeager, the first man to break the sound barrier.

Some heroes:
The passengers and crew of UA 93.
Audie Murphy
SFC Paul R. Smith
Every person who committed career suicide by publicly disagreeing with the Bush administration
Single, working parents
and Teachers in the public school system

I can think of many, but as of recent I'd have to pick former Georgia Congressman Bob Barr.

Barr is an icon amongst true conservatives. Anytime you see a man of his stature willing to stick his neck out and join forces against the Patriot act, with his former nemesis, the ACLU, you gotta give the man a lot of credit.

I haven't agreed with all Barr's positions, but I admire him for this one.

As a second example, I'd have to pick current Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney.

The way this Lady grilled Donald Rumsfeld on national television about the DynCorp scandal and the 9/11 war games, not only proves she's a tenacious warrior, but also a true advocate for the common people.

mistoferin -> RE: Who are Your Role Models? (4/17/2005 6:21:45 AM)

Wow, not one but two mentions....I am practically speechless....and so very touched. Especially seeing as they come from two people on these boards who I consider role models for myself. Dark Angel, you possess all of the eloquence and tact that I strive so hard to achieve but can never seem to grasp. BlkTallFullfig, you are a straight up lady. I always value your thoughts and opinions. You tell it like it is. Others on the collarme boards who I look up to are:
Mercnbeth (Merc for always being such a voice of reason and beth for opening her heart and soul for all to see and being such a great human being)
MizSuz (she is one class act)
LadyShoshin
DomTimothy
ScooterTrash and ShiftedJewel
MrThorns and Smilezz
Lawrence
GoddessJules(wish she’d come join us again)
BeachMystress
LadyAngelika (for teaching me that two people can still have a great deal of respect for each other even if they don’t see eye to eye)
PerverseAngelic
Harmony
Onceburned(Chris)

I have to say that my greatest role models in life have been my parents. My father is my hero. His family has been the focal point of his entire life and I don't think he has ever let one of us down. My mother who's kindness and caring have taught me much about myself. Her heart has been big enough to love the world and everyone in it. They have both opened their arms and their hearts to all who have come. My Grandmother, who's strong faith never waivered through much adversity. My sister who has graced the world with her beautiful heart through song.

My dear friends at Immediate Family for opening their hearts and their home to those in need...without judgement. The men of my past for having the patience and strength to help guide me to become the woman I am today. The Dominants, Dommes and submissives in my local communities who have helped me along my path...they know who they are.

Maya Angelou, for in her own words, she is a woman....phenomenally. Oprah Winfrey who found the strength and courage to rise above and reach out and help so many others. Pope John Paul II....for bridging the gaps of faith and loving unconditionally. Og Mandino...for his inspiring and encouraging words.

Oh I am sure there are oh so many others that I have missed, this is just off the top of my head (which right now is still swimming in the emotion of the kind words of others here). To those I have missed...I do hope you know who you are and how much I value you.

BobcatsLilMinx -> RE: Who are Your Role Models? (4/17/2005 7:08:43 AM)

My drama teacher in high school. She was the most awesome woman I ever met. She was the first person to ever try and communicate with the kid behind the "mask", and she taught me a lot about being myself. I would love to be a drama teacher when I grow up - just like her (I know it sounds cheesy).

And this next one will sound really cheesy - but my Master has become a bit of a role model too, because he went through a really bad place and came out the other side, happy and sane... Being in a bad place myself right now, it helps to have that hope, that knowledge that someone else has not only survived, but has found peace afterwards.

And... I think that about fills my cheese quota for the rest of the year!! [stops to file her nails into a couple of mean claws before her brain turns completely to mush]

Thanks erin. I have to add it takes 2 to duke it out but it takes 2 to patch things up. Thanks for meeting me halfway.

My role models are
- my mother for being a fantastic example of what a strong woman is and for instilling in me the belief that the sky is the limit
- my mentor and friend Rapier for so many reasons
- my best friend Caroline for overcoming the very huge obstacles life has presented her with and becoming one of the strongest women and most brilliant artists that I know of
- a few good professors who encouraged me to think outside the box
- those who take a stand and speak their minds in the name of equity, peace, love and freedom
- my cat for teaching me the benefits and wonders of a cat nap, snuggling and unconditional love ;)

Masterspetal -> RE: Who are Your Role Models? (4/17/2005 9:51:54 AM)

My role models are:
* my first daughter - who taught me that life is too short to sweat the small stuff - and that it's all small stuff (may she rest in peace)
* my second daughter - who at age 4 was diagnosed with cancer, and beat the terrible odds that go along with that disease. She has taught me many many things. She is in inspiration to all who meet her
* my Master - who is wise and witty and whom i look up to a great deal - He is my soulmate, my best friend, my husband and my Owner
* Bernard Spanjaard - a holocaust survivor and author who i had the honor of meeting back in HS - he was a true inspiration to me.
* FDNY and NYPD, those heroes on Flight 93, and at the Pentagon
* my fellow veterans, and active duty personnel in all the Armed Forces - no need to say more there

Those are my top ones... there are many in history whom i look up to as well.. but too many list here [:)]

Ranger, do a websearch on articles by Texas congressman Ron Paul. Not many folks would get me voting for a Republican for President, but even though I disagree with many of his views, I would vote for him in a second.

Manawyddan........

Your on the money! Dr. Paul is brilliant and honorable man in the company of a den thieves, liars, and cowards. With Paul, there's no such thing as political expediency.

The only downside to Paul is that he just doesn't seem to receive the fan fare the other two get, as both McKinney and Barr have an unusually bombastic style about them then tends to make the headlines more.

I think in a day and age when the the average schmoe cares more about who Trump is going to fire next instead of what's really happening in the world around them, the good guys need to make a lot more noise.
