AXB24 -> Equipment question (4/13/2005 9:41:41 AM)

I was curious what doms thought about equipment and toys. Who should buy them the sub or the master?

Myself i have a couple things that i am comfortable using but my budget only goes so far. Is there a way to indicate this to a possiable sub?

I am just getting started and was wondering how everyone else delt with this. I don't want to find a wonderful slave and be caught with little in the way of gear.

Should the dom always pay for the upkeep of the equipment? Or should it be split between both people.

What does everyone think?

In my experience and relationships if I want something specific I buy it, and if he wants something specific then he buys it. This generally works out really well.
The only exception is if it is something that we both want and it's really expensive, then we would generally split the cost. When we split up we also split up the toys and both felt that we divided it up fairly.

As per usual- whatever works for you. If you want to pay, you pay, if you want the sub to pay, the sub pays, if you want to share, then you share.

There's no should. The hard part comes if the relationship ends and you have to split the toys.

Lots of doms enjoy subs who have their own collections too.

Like whit many relationship it usualy matters on the tastes of the pepole and who have the most money to spend.

Things that can be used with others after they are cleaned such as floggers, single tails, paddles and basics like spreader bars, chain, rope etc should be the Dominant's property. Who buys them is an entirely different matter.

Insertables like dildos, gags, butt plugs, speculums and the like are best used on one person only.

Cuffs and collars are almost a fashion item and I have found that it makes a submissive very happy if you buy her her own set. They are hers to keep no matter what the relationship.

I hope that helps and good luck stocking up that toy bag.

Domino

I've bought a good many of my own toys. Some people set aside money for cigarettes and beer.. I set aside money for toys. It comes down to what is important enough to have you save money to purchase. I've received my most expensive toys as gifts. It is different for me, since I am a Domme and giving me a nice dildo is the equivalent of a nice bouquet of flowers (and about the same price.) Men court women- it's just the way things are- and since I am a total toy queen, when they want to impress me they buy or make me some special or unique toy.

The way I find it usually works in my area is that the Dom/me has the majority of toys and the sub has their own cuffs and a working/play collar, maybe a dildo or two, a few buttplugs and maybe a cock ring or two. I've only once found a man with a toy collection the size of mine. And we split up when he decided he wanted to switch and be Dom.

In a LTR, the person who can afford the toys is the one who buys them usually, since practicality sets in after you've been together a while.

If you are on a budget this thread might be helpful:

I agree with Emerald. I do not think there is any right or wrong way to do it. Like siamsa says, if You want something, You but it. If she wants something, she should buy it. I have bought all the toys I have so far, but that does not mean that I would mind if My sub bought something she liked in particular.

Me and my Dom avoid this problem, we live togeter and have combined economy.

I probably posted this in other threads, but one trap I fell into when I was just starting
out was to get over-involved in the particular toys.

I forgot the fundamental rule I learned in martial arts; a weapon is an extension of the
hand.

Where I am going with this is that using scarves or shoelaces and your hands (spankings,
etc) can achieve the effect you are trying to achieve, and cost next to nothing.

When you are comfortable achieving your goal, then you can branch out into various
implements to facilitate this.

I also recommended the perversion of places like Home Depot and surplus stores for the D/s-on-a-budget set.

A couple of my favorite toys are martial arts weapons I had made and brought over to the
dark side, as well as a Wurtenberg wheel I bought at a medical supply shop.

Just me, could be wrong, but there ya go.

It might depend on what toys you're talking about. Many subs feel that they should own their own sex toys to be sure of body fluids. Others want to own all their own toys, in case of blood contamination and such. Some don't want to own any because they feel offering toys is topping from the bottom.

As others have said, it's going to depend on your and your sub. Helpful, huh? ;-)
